Getting To Know: Marcus Lovett Interview

Found it interesting how much he spoke about Mullin being a factor in his decision, and how he believes that if there is anyone who can advise him on what he needs to do to realize his dream of playing at the next level, and advise him on the league generally, it is Coach. I hope Lovett and his Dad both pay attention to what Chris and Mitch have to say after this season.

I will assume he is gone and be thrilled if he returns. IMO one more year would do wonders for Marcus and for our team. We could be a top 25 team with Marcus back(assuming everyone else returns) and with the addition of a solid PF. If he does decide to go, I am fine with Simon stepping in. Not going to provide as much offense, but will be an improvement in size and on D.

Not sure that Chris and Mitch have any better advice for him than many of us on here, which is: If you're looking to have a career playing ball oversees than you can leave at any time. If you're looking to play in the NBA then it would be wise to stick around, work on becoming a true PG and elevate your stock.

Mercurial, talented & likeable kid. Obviously it would be super if he returns. For now I'll enjoy him & see what way the wind blows after the season.

Marcus will not leave school early unless sometime down the road he 's a first round draft pick.

He absolutely needs to be starting. We can't spot the top half of the big east the early lead we gave the hall.

With Simon and Clark joining next year Lovett will have a very good team to lead and improve his assist numbers which he needs to do to get to the next level.

If he was projected as a lock first round pick, I'd say god bless ya kid and got get paid and realize your dream. Thing is, I think a guard like Marcus can still get better playing against Big East guards next season. There will be some excellent ones in the conference. If he was a big, I'd feel differently, because not sure how many certain bigs (like Delgado) can improve playing against teenagers. But Lovett can improve if he stays.

Not doubting this since I constantly see it being brought up, but where would he go? Another school, overseas, or try for the NBA? Just find it surprising because seems like he really enjoys being here. He'd be a major piece of next year's team.

Based on what others have said, it seems like Europe would be a likely destination if he is looking to get paid to play.

Thanks, well better than transferring and being unhappy with the program at least. Obviously goes without saying it'd be a major blow to next year's team. Also think it'd be in his best interests to stay another year but I'm biased. Really hoping he returns.

In assessing Lovett's potential for the NBA, one might look at the Dallas Mavericks Yogi Ferrell..Ferrell was a 4 year starter at Indiana and a Mcd All American in HS.

He is 6'0' and 180 lbs. Despite a outstanding career at IU, He went undrafted in the 2016 NBA draft. He played Summer Ball on the Nets team but, was waived and went to the D league. Nets called him up and then released him again.

On JAN 28, the Mavericks signed him to a 10 day Contract. Due to injuries he started and played 4 games, including one in which he went for 30 points vs Portland. The Mavs then signed him to a 2 year contract.. Stupid Nets!

Point being, Yogi played 4 years in college , went undrafted, likely due to size but, persevered and realized his NBA dream.

Lovett is not yet Yogi but, the point is, he may develop into a PG for some team. He is not there yet but, Mullin can get him there. He needs another year or 2 of College ball to refine his skills and build his resume. Being BE Player of the YEAR, IN 2018 OR 19 , would do that.

At his size, he will need to show he can outquick the bigger Guards he will see in the NBA. He has shown he can blow by many of the bigger BE guards, not all. He has a great Jumper but, can improve even more. What better can he learn about shooting than Mullin?

Ponds too, shares many of these same skills but, does need to bulk up a bit.. He is not as quick as Lovett but, close and may be a slightly better shooter.. He is also a little more deceptive going to the hoop but, not much.

The same things apply to Ponds having a NBA career but, he isn't ready yet..

Lastly, I think we can win 3 of the 5 Remaining games to go 9-9 in Conf play.

No doubt he should stay, but logic often is trumped by other factors in today's "Get me to next level" mentality. We'll see. Perhaps finishing strong & getting more of MSG winning experiences will be positives in his and his father's decision.

It seems we're all assuming there will be player moves after the season as this is now common across the sport. It would be unusual not to have two or three kids move on for whatever reason. The good news with the Johnnie is that they have a top rated guard ready to play 30 minutes or more next season.

Let's enjoy this great freshmen backcourt down the stretch.

When April comes around we'll know who is in for next season.

The improved play of the team, with the likelihood of us taking a huge step forward next year, has got to bode well for Marcus coming back. With the addition of Simon in the backcourt, and with the offensive improvement across the board, Marcus won't be relied upon to provide as much offense as this year. He can be more of a true PG next year, which will serve him well as he looks to play in the NBA one day.

Wish Marcus the best no matter what decision he makes. If not for NCAA screw job he would have two years of game experience. Chris and Mitch may be ideal for him now if the vision is to become an Isaiah Thomas (of the Celtics) type guard where the penetration skills set up the outside shooting and vice versa. No matter what he needs some kind of disability insurance because the memory of Daryl Showtime Hill post-injury is not gone for most of us and while that can happen at any time in a player's career, it should not lead to total loss of economic benefit from BB skills.

Marcus would not qualify for the "NCAA Exceptional Student-Athlete Disability Insurance Program". The threshold for a college basketball player is "potential to be selected in first round of upcoming draft".
