Getting Students Involved

Considering what the expectations were for the year, I have to say, our students have been much more supportive (both in terms of attendance & crowd noise) than I expected this season. That said, we can always use more student support. There is a push to try and get more students to show up in red suits, now that would be interesting.
 
Just a few tidbits on Rutgers approach to increase student attendance at games. Granted they have a much larger pool of students than SJU, but the ideas and staff participation are interesting. It seems the students attending our games are very into it, not sure of the number who attend regularly.

My son goes to a horrible ACC basketball school. They cannot draw at all EXCEPT for Duke, Syracuse, UNC, Louisville and any MAYBE other top ranked ACC schools. Other than that, they don't draw at all.

Not sure if at Rutgers it is the same, but kids generally don't come out for losing schools at all unless they are playing top ranked competition, and those are kind of fair weather fans.

Our student fans who come regularly are awesome fans and a good place to start. I hope that they see winning basketball here, and when they do, aren't put into a pool with kids who haven't showed up the way these guys do.

Have you caught the two kids who wear snazzy bright red suits to home games, with white shirts and red ties? One of them does a great death stare into the camera when he is on screen at MSG, which is frequent. Again, to go to that expense for a student is an indication of great fans!

NYC Redmen introduced me to one of those red suited students at a CA game. He was a very nice & enthusiastic guy.

Other than ice hockey (which is one of the nation's best team's year in and year out), BC has a tough time attracting fans.

I believe they only get about 30-35K for home football games.
 
Isn't the red-suited kid who does the death stare the same kid who was in the band the last several years? He did several other amusing looks while in the band.

Yeah he's graduated and has taken his schtick to a Miles Davis cover band. B)
 
Who remembers the guy from the "glory" years who was way up in the stands in the Garden and who took his shirt (or was it a towel or flag (a bit fuzzy)) and wound it over and over again over his head. He was rather husky and his round mounds jiggled and jiggled, but honestly he really got the student section and the whole place going nuts.

Wonder what ever happened to that guy, My buddies and I called him our SUPER FAN.

Don't get me started on how much I miss Flag Boy too.
 
I remember that guy, but didn't know him. Yes, he was a bowl of jelly when he whipped his red and white scarf around his head. Sometimes he may have used his sweater. And agree, he got the crowd riled up.

offer them what little Ricky's assistant did....of course leaving us, like Ricky, with plausible deniability, a la Chris Christie and Bridgegate.

Christie's next gig is taking over for Fatscessa. Perfect, one blowhard for another.
 
Our student support has gotten a bad rap at times in the past. Some of it was understand able, but lets keep in mind that since 2003 we've had more downs than ups. I think that over the last 3 years in particular our student support has gotten much better. If the program cab get back to winning consistently, I think more scenes like these will follow :cheer:

Actually, the interst has been pretty good from at least a loyal following of students since SL arrived on campus. That season, students created the Lavinwood section which was a pretty loud bunch. What we will see here is not a gradual build of student support, but an upswell when we crack the top 30. Kids will then behave as if they were ardent fans forever, when for many it will be the first game they attended.
