Get Off The Ledge-Here's Why

Four losses where we were the dog in all 4. Then a flat as hell non-effort at home. And 90% of the board wants to throw in the towel. I'm not surprised. Losses to a team you were favored to beat by a country mile can damage even the most loyal fan. But every poster was around in 2007-2008. A team filled with 3 star freshman, and a couple of 4s if you count Dele Coker. Not one as good (as freshman) as Ponds or Lovett. Probably not a one as good as Bashir Ahmed. That team goes 11-19, 5-13. Three seasons later, with the addition of Hardy and Brownlee, the team goes 21-12, 12-6 and makes the dance after a so-so start that included getting blown out more than once, and losing to St. Mary's and Fordham. Coached by Lavin no less, a know nothing coach if there ever was one.

Then the 2011-2012 season begins with a young team filled with 4 star recruits. One left early, another became eligible mid season. One of the 4 stars now starts in the NBA. That team goes 13-19, 6-12. Three season later, without the best recruit of all of them, the team wins 20 games and makes the NCAAs.

What's the point? It's probably not wise to judge a team full of freshman after 7 games. My guess is that Ellison, Mussini and a few others will leave next season, or see limited minutes. Pieces will be added to the core of Ponds and Lovett who are much better than the spare parts Mullin rushed to recruit the past 2 years. Maybe Mullin adds an assistant that doesn't have to bring his ID to buy a beer at Stouts. The four year plan will take 3 years. And all will be well in Redmen-land. So get off the ledge, and drink heavily this season. If we get inebriated enough, we will be too nauseous to post this apocalyptic scenario that has Mullin loading the car with gas and heading back to the West Coast, and out prized recruits transferring to Providence. Just stay off the ledge if you get loaded prior to the Tulane game.

True, but just think of how happy everyone will be when we win 20 games in 2020 and lose in the first round of the tourney. The Cubs waited more than a century, which made this year that much sweeter. Then again, I am a Mets/Jets fan, so I'm used to mediocrity with occasional seasons of near joy that end with a crushing defeat.

I won't be and the one and done Hardy and Dlo seasons didn't either. In Hardy's season I should say the post season didn't but the regular season run beating a bunch of ranked teams was satisfying. The Cubs may have waited over 100 years but a lot of their fans didn't as tens of millions of them died waiting.

At least many of the deceased Redmen fans got to see the Wonder Five. What do the middle aged and senior citizen Redmen fans have? To remember the 1952 final game appearance and loss to Kansas, you would have to be at least 70. The next final 4 was 33 years later. At this pace, we are due for another big run in 2017-2018. Wait, that's next season. Hooray.

I appreciate the post Ray. We're just not a good program/team yet. But I still think Mullin, his staff and some of our new young guys will get us there. It's going to take time.

Let's also recall that Indiana lost to Ft. Wayne a couple weeks ago. Yes, I know SJU can't be compared to IU (basketballwise), but just pointing out that strange and aggravating things do happen. And life goes on. I agree with most other posters that all this takes time, and not just one season. We have rookie players and (still) a rookie coach and staff.

Yes, young players with a coach that is doing on the job learning.
With that said I expect just a little improvement with in-game coaching, half time adjustments, and substituting. He had a high bball iq as a player, I can't see how that changes as a coach. Yeah, I know being a player and a coach are 2 different thing, but the guy knows basketball period

Hopefully by February he starts figuring things out as a coach and we start clicking as a team.

One of the things some posters may have missed is that Lovett has very good Point Guard skills that are not fully realized because Yakwe and Sima haven't developed good hands or, make that power move to the Hoop.. No sense trying to set them up, as they haven't shown much ability to score inside. Better for Lovett to penetrate or just shoot. Same with Ponds

Mussini contributes when he is on, and seems to work well with Ponds, Lovett or both. Ahmed has a nice touch and can go to the rack, just needs to stay under control. That pretty well sums up our Offense this year. we need more bulk and skill in the Front Court, which will likely not happen until next year.. Patience, please.
