Georgetown/Sienna

Later this week Georgetown will be playing Sienna at the Verizon Center in DC. If you have a proper ID from the District of Columbia you (and 3 friends from anywhere) can go to the box office and get 4 free tickets. They'll still be lucky to draw 1500-2000. Nobody down here cares about G'Town AT ALL anymore. They've gone back in time and Maryland is once again the big team in DC area. Not great for the Big East.

GTown needs to end the Ewing experiment and hire someone who can really coach. It is still a desirable job IMO.

Ewing at least has that BET championship he can look back on. Tenure wasn't a total failure. He should bow out

So in the battle of program legends, Ewing got the edge in playing days of course, but I guess we got to say Mully got him as a coach? Possibly the only person he has outcoached in his tenure. Only difference is Ewing had insane miracle run in BET and otherwise Gtown gave him more rope. Dude went 0-19 five years into his tenure and they brought him back? Could you imagine this board in that circumstance? What is Gtown doing? They got to go outside the Thompson tree - they need to be a big time program. Big East on thin ice these days, especially without Wright and Nova as the standard bearer.

Gtown made tournament
You know who hasn’t made the tournament as St John’s coach?
miracle run in the BET was cool but it really changed the perception of what Ewing has done there.

He hasn't been good.

reminds me of that Georgia coach from the 2000s who had a shit team but he won the SEC tournament and it bought him a little more time. I saw a doc about it once.

This guy. The miracle run bought him only one more season. Feels like Ewing is here a year too long

As a St. John’s fan, I’ll be happy if Georgetown retains Ewing and they continue to be unsuccessful. The league has many great coaches and many teams have upped their recruiting. The Hoyas could be a sleeping Giant and the right coach could wake them up. Do you really want another great program to contend with?

Not me.

A successful Georgetown program is better for the Big East brand and will increase value or media rights during upcoming negotiations with pending expiration of Fox contracts.
You're living in the past. The face of the BE is nova, creighton and yukon.

I agree with that in theory but if a successful Georgetown program puts St.John’s another notch down, while we are currently viewed as a middle of the pack team, that will just be an additional hurdle to overcome to get to the Dance.

I professed against UConn coming to the league to avoid what has transpired. They used the league affiliation to recruit well and as a state school has superior resources. Is it good for the conference, maybe for the top three or four teams, but for the rest, just another hurdle.

the more teams that can get their act together, the better the conference.

that includes us.

I don't wanna be a contending team in the big east just because all these great programs have fallen on hard times. I want them to be at the top of their game, and us at the top of ours, and we beat them.

As of now, there's work to be done on our end and their end

i recognize your argument- that another Top squad would push us down... but don't we wanna try and be a "Top" squad of the "Top" squads? I am rational enough to realize that we have not been in that "Top" category for 20+ years... but we shouldn't be scared of other BE squads raising their profile.

Otherwise, why compete in the Big East?

we haven't been but it should still be to goal as a fan. I agree

Ewing days are numbered, he should step down and go enjoy his money. Great players never made great coaches. But we shouldn't wish Georgetown ill-will in their resurrection, a strong SJU and GT team can only help the Big East. All my friends in the mid-west call us the Big Least.

Johnny … the revamped Big East hit the ground running in 2013 largely because of its media contract with Fox made the Big East relevant and attractive to recruits, alums, and sponsors.

The Big East’s decision to admit UConn was a hard cold calculated business decision by the Big East, it’s media advisors, and Fox as a means to increase its League’s inventory of games and protect its brand.

Given the reshuffling among P5 conferences and the big dollar new TV contracts to the Big 10 and others, the Big East’s upcoming negotiations for a new TV contract with Fox, ESPN and others would be strengthened by a strong national brand in Georgetown and strong TV viewership in the Washington DC market.

Again, perhaps you are correct but when the Garden is filled with UConn fans and the Johnnies are getting their butts kicked, which this season is a real possibility, all that other stuff goes out the window in my book. A strong Big East is only good for those teams who are consistently tourney bound. Sadly, that’s not the case with St. John’s right now, if ever.

Can't take my kids to the UCONN games. Those fans are disgusting. Can't tell how many times I stepped to them and they punked out. It does feel great when we beat them and watch all them crying back to the bus...
