Frustrating Loss

Nothing going our way now, opponent's three pointers rolling around and going in, awful officiating, no bench and poor free throw shooting add up to close but no cigar.
I don't know if I like Owens new fascination with the 3 pointer, then on two occasions he has to shoot it with the shot clock expiring, and he passes!
Officiating was horrible, the foul call on Simon running into the guy setting a moving pick cannot be called. Either have to call a double foul or swallow the whistle. Game to me changed when Creighton player shielded Owens away with his free hand and ended up getting Tariq in the air for a foul call, it was his third and he played tentative the rest of the way. Seeing a lot of this pushing off with the free hand this year, or course they call it on Trimble.
Someone mentioned it on the big boy game thread and I agree, down 2 with 40 or so seconds left, I don't think you can put all your eggs in one basket and hope to hold defensively. If it doesn't work, and it didn't, the game is over. I say you pressure the ball in hopes of fouling. You need to extend the game, letting them milk the clock shortens it way too much.

From my perspective, you can chalk this loss up to Chris Mullin. Geez...I hate badmouthing the legend, but it is absolutely true. This a game we should have definitely won and I would blame the loss on two specific things. Number one would be the entry into this game of Alibegovic, who has absolutely no business being on the court. He entered the game with St. John's up by seven and left with us down three. I totally predicted this swing during this substitution where Mullin removed Owens for Mr. slow moving-poor shooting-bad ball handling- no defense. He committed several mindless fouls, set himself up for threes that he has no business taking, threw the ball away, and played the worst defense...completely untracking the rather good defense we had been playing to that point. Owens had picked up his second with 12 minutes to play. Mullin panicked. He also brought in Trimble at about the same time....removing Clark from the floor equation. That substitution folks cost us the game. By the time he restored order to the universe we were down 5. I have absolutely no idea what he was thinking. Of course, now with the game close, the referees got involved....missing a key Creighton up and down on the perimeter which eventually in the same possession, gave them 3 that they didn't deserve...and a missed goal tending call in the remaining minute that would have tied the game. My second coaching indiscretion is his improper use of our only aspiring professional...that would be Ponds. How many scoreless or low scoring first halves are we going to get from him. Mullin does not have Ponds, our only seemingly dependable scorer, in the flow. There is nothing designed to get him open looks. He depends on happenstance, and when Shamorie does gets his touches it's like his expectations say, "OK, do your thing kid"! It doesn't work that way. Defenses are keying on Ponds and it is you coaching responsibility to devise schemes to free him for open looks. It is also mandatory that you reel him in from shooting from four feet behind the three point line. He is NOT Steph Curry! When Ponds takes bad shots, he is just another shooter. Chris...You have the responsibility of creating an environment where he can succeed...and you're not doing that. St. Johns cripples it's chances when we have two-man games with Alibegovic and Owens. The right people have to carry the scoring load for this teamto succeed. Yakwe is way way better than Alibeovic...where was he? At least he plays some defense. This is very sorry and sad loss. Creighton simply stole it from us. I would say...Never hire someone you can't fire...that is always a mistake!

I'm convinced Yakwe was under the weather or Mullin had some other good reason for not playing him.

I don’t blame Mullin for the loss. We actually played them closer than anyone thought we would have. You can not play in the BE w 5 players, and our best one not 100 percent. We have no quality backups w Lovett out. Now you can blame Mullin for not getting a quality Freshman,JUCO or grad transfer and he maybe responsible for some of the players leaving

. The losses of Sima,Ellison,Mussini,Williams hurt a lot w depth. I also would play Yakwe over AA. and agree Owens should have played more. I do think we need another recruiter/ xo guy on the staff like Rice ,who would be an inexpensive investment.

to whether Yakwe was capable of playing. In any event, He kept Owens and Clark on the bench for WAY TOO LONG!
These people are kids. They're also conditioned high level athletes. Man, when we were their age, we would play all day long.
I refuse to accept that you would play Alibegovic one second longer than was necessary for those two to catch their breaths.
Neither was in foul trouble. There was 12 minutes left in the game. I stand by my original assessment. That decision cost
the Red Storm this ball game

Who are the Red Storm? I was watching a Redmen coach leading a Redmen team.

You may be right. Owens is fouling less and if he and Clark stayed in longer ,we may have won. Bigs tire faster and playing them al ost 40 minuted is not sustainable, they will burn out. You also have to give credit to staff for going to the 2/3 zone and keeping the game as close as it was on the road.
 
Agree regarding burnout factor. Buy I wish to remind you that we are winless in the Big East...we are desperate to get our first league win....we had the opportunity to win on a difficult road court where we had never returned with a W....and again, I am not advocating for 40 minutes from anyone. But putting Alibegovic and Trimble in together shows a lack of understanding of how negatively they impact the defense....and both played entirely too long. That is my main point.
