Free Throws

After watching basketball for more than 60 years, I am perplexed why women seem to shoot free throws better than men. From high school, to college, to the pros. Anyone care to weigh in on this?

They do not overpower it,most not all seem to have better mechanics. They have better consentration You heard it needs a womans touch . Arc and rotation follow through .arm and hand extended pointing directly at the rim after the release of the ball. Most important control your nerves and believe you can make it every time you go to the line.Get in a pattern i.e do the same thing every time you go to the line. If you bounce the ball 3x do it he idea is to stay consistent.
Oh yes take 500 free throws a day and at their level you can become a very good free throw shooter but to be great you have to do all these things and have the god-given gift touch to shoot the basketball
side note is it me or what every eam we played so far as a team shot the ball betterfrom the line from 2 and from 3

Men are typically better athletes. They can get by athleticism and being 6'8. Women don't have the height or athleticism, so they have no choice but to focus more on fundamentals and mechanics....

Duke, they DON'T!

I remember once reading a study that focused on FT shooting % but cannot remember where and it showed that over 50 years FT shooting has remained at an average of around 70%. Women have averaged around the same over this period. The averages on the pro level are about 5% higher only because off the skill level of the pros vs. amateur BB players.

In short, it is an old wives tale. LOL!

The big difference are those who can consistently make them when it counts, when the pressure is on

They are also usually easier to coach than men.

good commentary. The ball is smaller, while they use the same hoops, so this does account for some of the improvement. I do remember reading that in the NCAA, overall women shoot a few % points better.

Having coached high school girls in AAU and seeing the very best players in a 5 or 6 state area, I would say that overall girls follow instruction better, but are less instinctive overall than guys. You ask them to run a play, and they run it as taught. They won't, however break the play as often if there is a breakdown on the defense that would lead to an easy basket.

Fundamentally, girls do have worse form overall, and I really don't think they practice as much as guys. But they also don't waste time trying to dunk, and they don't step backwards to shoot a three as much as guys do when a shorter shot is available.

I really think it has more to do with the size of the ball than anything else. In NCAA perhaps overall their are less crowd distractions in game situations because attendance is lower.

I've always felt that size and strength decreases fine motor skills---which is why big men tend to be worse foul shooters than guards. Another factor is the ability to lower the adrenaline at at moment and put yourself in a relaxed state. That has nothing to do with being male or female but some people can do it, while others are too energized while at the line.

Focus. We have a shorter attention span and women tend to keep their heads where their feet are.

I recently heard that a study says men think about sex every 7 seconds. Seems impossible, but... That might be a problem when you're at the free throw line.

Maybe we should put more girl students behind the baskets to line up the shots better
