Frank Gilroy / Former St. John's Basketball Player

Tough guy as well.. if i remember correctly, he played most of his senior season with a goalie-style face-mask to protect a broken nose... No wonder his kid turned into a hockey player.. peace!

Good memory, that was the case. Always liked him, didn't hurt that he we went to same HS.

Frank was in school when I was, and I know his HS coach very well. This guy has an amazing amount of integrity, and I know some sotries to that effect that I would not share publicly. Needless to say, he's had his share of life's burdens, but did some things in the midsts of them that very few of us would have the courage and honor to do. Aside from being a great athlete, simply having gone to the same school as this guy is an honor.

Anyone know if the kid on Wisconsin Ben Brust is related to our Matt Brust? Has the same build, gait and mannerisms so I'm guessing yes.

I went to high school with Matt at St. Mary's in Manhasset, we were the same year. I played on the lacrosse team with him, he is also a very good lacrosse player. He has been known to attend a few SJU games now and then.

Matty Brust was ALL heart... left it all out on the floor... he did though have one of the ugliest jumpers in b-ball history..lol... Our current squad could certainy use Brust or Gilroy.. ;)

We could use Gilroy's shot from the corner; otherwise, the way this team is built, no thanks.

Article about Frank Gilroy's son, who plays for The N.Y. Rangers.

http://rangers.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=650135

Frank was a very good player for St. John's back in the late 1970's.

Believe he played his high school ball at Holy Cross.

Remember, one game at The Garden, where he shot the lights out in a win vs. Duke.

Bad knees hampered his career at St. John's (yes he attended Holy Cross High School and was very highly recruited).

A real nice guy who I haven't seen in awhile but I use to run in to him at soccer tournaments as we both had kids that played.

If I remember correctly, Matt usually wears the number of one of his brothers (who died around 9 or 10) use to wear. Another brother also died young.

Frank's brother Mike also died at a young age. Great family the Gilroy's.

Reverse two hand slam vs. Duke.

For those who think he couldn't play on this team, he replaced Curtis Redding in the starting lineup and the team played much better after the switch.

Redding was a guy who thought he was better than all his teammates and that any of his shots had to be a better shot than any shots his teammates took. I nicknamed him Hollywood, and it stuck. Once benched he loudly rooted for our opponent from the SJU bench. I think he was shooting about 30% from the field when Carnsecca made the change.

I loved Frank Gilroy. Can still see him -- with face mask and bad knees -- giving it his all. He was a key member of that '79 NCAA tourney team that just missed going to the Final Four. (I'm still convinced that if Looie had started Gordon Thomas, who was playing great at the time, over Bernard Rencher, we have beaten Penn ... only to be thoroughly crushed by Michigan State.) As noted above, thought Frank had nice outside shot and great court sense, but he just wasn't fast/quick enough to play on this team. (They sure could use his smarts, but they're still young enough to develop their own by the time they're upperclassmen.) As for Redding, those of us who are old enough to remember him can probably all agree on one thing: he was a cancer to the team, probably the worst one we ever had.

I'm fairly certain Rencher works for St. John's.

I was actually referring to Matt Gilroy on the Rangers. sorry for the confusion.

APOLOGIES TO BERNARD RENCHER!!! I meant to write that Curtis Redding was a cancer to the team ... probably the worst we ever had. (Will go back and edit my grievous error.)

Gordon Thomas shot the lights out from the field in the '79 NCAA's. However, I do not recall Rencher being a problem on the team. Saw him a few times around campus and he was always friendly. He played point guard with Reggie Carter at shooting guard. Thomas came off the bench and played small forward and some shooting guard.
