So, we all know the story. Fox offered the Big East a lot of money to put all of our games on national TV and help launch their new channels, Fox Sports 1 and 2. We also have some games on national Fox and other channels like ESPN during out of conference play (tournaments, @ Cuse, etc).

Now, although I think it has always been a great thing for the Big East some people are pessimistic because Fox Sports 1 and 2 don't draw like ESPN does. The optimistic people said it would take time for the channel to grow.

Well, it's growing, at least for now, and at a fast rate.

Article #1: Two Years In, Is The Fox Sports 1 Plan Succeeding?

Summary: basically Fox Sports 1 and 2 are in more homes now than a few months ago and they may already be breaking even.

And for those of you who don't know, Fox has the rights to a lot of soccer events and the sport has been BOOMING in the ratings this Summer. Women's World Cup had a lot of games on FS1.

Here's another article from yesterday:

FOX SPORTS' SUMMER OF SOCCER CONTINUES TO POST BIG AUDIENCES AS NEW MARK IS SET FOR MEN'S SOCCER GAME

Gold Cup just started which will produce massive ratings. USA's game on FS1 tonight and there should be millions of people watching:

Even MLS has seen big ratings this summer, so soccer should be a massive staple for them for years to come.

Further, other newly added events like the MLB playoffs (and regular season), college football, and NASCAR have introduced millions to the channel.

Fox Sports 1 is becoming a success and it will become more common to walk into a bar or gym and see FS1 playing rather than ESPN. It won't happen overnight, but it looks like the channel is successful and we should see higher Big East ratings this year. Half the battle is just getting people to find the channel on their TV guides and watch enough to take it seriously as an alternative to ESPN.

In sum, having nearly all our games on Fox Sports 1 and Fox national is a good thing. If we were with ESPN they wouldn't play a lot of our games or put them on ESPN U/3.

Just read an article by Hoops Weiss where he talked about ESPN trying to cut costs. They are letting go of some personalities. The parent company, Disney, is upset about the amount of money ESPN has been paying out for broadcasting rights. The article also states that Fox is making progress and doing well financially. Soccer has helped Fox tremendously.

Awesome, and yes ESPN has been doing that in response to Fox. For example just recently they overpaid for NBA rights to keep Fox from getting any of them. I'm pretty confident Big Ten will sign at least a partial deal with Fox next year. Fox owns the Big Ten network and we're getting the Big East Big Ten challenge for this reason.

It also seems like Fox has a deal with the Pac12 as some of their games were on after the BE games last season.

They really really really really really really really really really need to get fox sports 2 on high def. aside from that I watch FS1 or 2 almost every day and don't even remember what channel number ESPN is

The Big 12, Pac 12, and Conference USA all have sublicensing agreements with FOX Sports, similar to what the Big East has with CBS Sports Network. Fox airs football from all 3 leagues, as well.

As far as ESPN cutting costs, they've already parted ways with Bill Simmons, and will do so with Keith Olbermann at the end of the month. In both cases, I'm pretty sure the talent's asking price was too high (though Olbermann's criticisms of Roger Goodell reportedly ticked off the top brass at both the NFL, and ESPN).

And I think Fox Sports has the rights to the next 2 men's soccer World Cups in 2018 and 2022. (ESPN had the past few I believe). Fox has money to spend so I think they will be competing (and winning) against ESPN for content.

It is in HD on DirecTV, so that's not a Fox issue. It's your provider who's screwing that up. I don't blame you for wanting it in HD, as SD is almost unwatchable nowadays.

Fox 1 also has UFC which is huge with people in their 30's and 20's.. Even some older folks like myself have grown to love it over time thanks to my son. I find myself going to fox1 and 2 as much now as I go to espn and espn2.

Didn't know that. dont know why FIOS wouldn't use one of their 20,000 channels to put FS2 on high def
