Former Target Ish Wainwright

Played two minutes tonight in an OT win for Baylor and is averaging only 11 mpg. He has seen single-digit minutes 7 of the last 10 games. Why would such a talented SF go to a school that essentially returns four starters 2-4 and another kid that played 20 mpg? When he looked at the roster last year he saw:

C - Ike Davis - Rising Soph who has seen his draft stock fall to the point where he might be a four year player
PF - Cory Jefferson - A likely NBA 2nd Round pick
SF - Rico Gathers - A similar power player that will be around for four years
SG _ Brady Heslip - Two-year starter, plays big minutes, two years of eligibility left....really hurts and chance to get minutes at the two
PG _ Freshman recruited to fill vacancy
Bench
Gary Franklin -Rising Senior guard, played about 20 mpg
Taurean Prince - Rising 6'7 Soph SF that can score
4-Star 6'9 PF Johnathan Motley was Committed by that point as well

After he committed they added a JR 6'6 220 SF transfer that started two years at Denver is playing 25 mpg with Baylor, and a jacked top 100 6'4 210 SF/SG that is redshirting due to injury this year. Jefferson graduates but the two 3-star players come off redhsirt. I wouldn't be shocked to see him transfer.

I'd take him and his 7'3 wingspan as a transfer in a heartbeat :)

Heslip is terrible, could be the worst player in D1. Kid can shoot but that is all he can do not an athlete at all, very painful to watch him play.

I can think of a few shooters who bring less to the table than him.

Not a huge fan of Wainwright. To me he lacks solid perimeter skills and is more of an undersized four. Do like his intensity.

There is no comparison to be made between the two of them. Totally different players.

I think there is. A high ranking that was probably too high for both of them. Both do a lot of little things but haven't lived up to what their ranking might say they should be.

I watched Wainwright a lot in HS. There is no doubt he is better than the numbers have shown him to date but of course playing 11 mpg will do that. Shooting is not his strength. He excels from the FT line area where he can dribble pass or little J. Not outside threat. Not an athletic freak where he can guard perimeter like Dom but solid defensively. Lets see how his minutes increase next year and how he develops. Look at how Cory Jefferson barely played for 2 years and then came out like a house on fire.

Im talking in style of play. One is very under control and relies on fundamentals. The other does not.

That's true. But I was referring to expectations and production and at the end of the day what you get. One might take the bull in a china shop approach, the other night. But at the end of the day the results could be the same.

Very doubtful he gets a chance to play more next year. Some of these guys need to do a better job picking schools.

He's probably only getting 11mpg because he can't stay on the court because of lack of condition. Wainwright looks out of shape he must hit the treadmill this off season. 6'7 and I say he's closer to 250 with out being athletic is no good. He has to get down to at least 220.

Most people would have said Gathers needed to get in better shape. Ish wasn't that big in HS really. Of course the college game is faster. Like Marillac said pick your school better. A more deliberate offense would benefit him.

As stupid as it sounds, I think Ish wanted to go to a school that had a big time football program.

If you remember his list, they were all big time football schools except for SJU.

I believe he had Texas, Ohio State and another football school that I can't remember.

And concerning his weight, he was always big and muscular but he had suffered some injury and put a whole bunch of weight on and never lost it.

I really didn't see the need for him here. Rico we could've used. But not Ish.

As an aside, I saw BJ Anya recently and was totally unimpressed. He was huge. Kind of like a less skilled Josh Smith. It's amazing that a kid could play basketball and practice for hours everyday and he has that hard a time managing his weight.

Exactly. Look at year one...Jefferson and Ike Austin are going to get 30+ at the 4/5 and Heslip is a guaranteed 27+ at two guard (right or wrong). For a versatile kid like Wainwright, that leaves one position to compete with the most jacked kid to ever play in the NCAA, who is a similar power player, and one of the best rebounders in the country. They also had a promising 6'7 freshman wing returning and a signed 6'9 four star PF. There is confidence in your ability and then there is just recognizing a situation that doesn't have a lot of opportunity. I can't fault him for the Jr. Denver transfer that came in after he signed and is now playing 25 mpg. They have two 4-star kids coming off redshirt next year. He should cut his losses and find a program that can offer him time and is better suited to his abilities. If that school is in Queens...even better :) We'll have some 2015 minutes at the three and four spots.

BTW, who the hell would want to play Baylor in the tournament. Everyone better hope they don't make it, because they have shooters, a scary frontline, and they are hands down the best offensive rebounding team out there. Gathers is averaging 3.2 per game in 18 freaking minutes...that is mind-boggling. His adjusted rebounding stats for 40 minutes would put him at 15.7 rebounds per game...playing with two NBA big men.

It's incredible. I always feel safe about a big man losing weight for that reason...that is why I'm not worried about De La Rosa. He is going to walk in to a great D-1 conditioning program and have access to facilities and supervision he's never had before. And at 6'11 playing basketball six days a week...weighting 270...he'd have to eat 7,000 calories to just maintain!

I felt good, that is, until Paultzman said he saw De La Rosa and Govan on the snack line at MSG!

Ha! Actually Marillac I saw Govan lining up for chow, but DelaRosa in fairness walked by briskly. Maybe he was doing laps. Lol! He looked much lighter. Getting there.

Would that be the same Heslip that put 29 up on us last year? Yea, that kid sucks...

Last year we led the country in making crappy kids look good. (Not that I agree with that assessment of Heaslip)
