Ichiro won ROY when he was 27.  Many felt he shouldn't have been eligible because of his age/years of experience playing pro ball in Japan. 2nd and 3rd in voting that year were Sabathia and Alphonso Soriano

Matsui also was considered a rookie when he came over however he lost to Angel Barrio when two writers refused to vote for him because of his age.

Correct.  It more pointed to the Yankees hatred by the voters in that case.
