The below linked article indicates that former 4 star recruit plans to transfer to a school closer to his home in Plainfield, New Jersey.

Gordon played one season as Western Kentucky where he averaged 11.8 points and 6.7 rebounds per game on his way to earning Third Team All-Sun Belt Conference honors.

Gordon started all 35 games for WKU this season and helped lead WKU to a Sun Belt Tournament title and a berth in the NCAA Tournament, winning its first round fame before being defeated in the second round to eventual champion Kentucky.

He became the first freshman in WKU history to lead the team in scoring since freshmen became eligible in the 1972-73 season.

That's a great story. Derrick sounds like a good kid. Hopefully his brother straightens himself out.

6.7 rebounds per game for a 6'2 guard? I don't need to see anything else...the kid competes!

Level of comp has to come in to play, no?

Probably has a bit to do with it but: he had 13 and 9 against Louisville, 12 and 5 against Kentucky in the tournament, 25 and 8 against St. Joe's, 12 and 4 against VCU, 9 and 5 against VCU the first time, 6 and 9 against Tulsa, and 4 and 5 against LSU. Only 4 and 2 against Murray State, though. Very tough nonconference schedule for WKU. WKU might be the best team nobody know about. Its history is pretty ridiculous

Love a guard that could rebound. Remember Geno had a lot of boards. But he wasn't down low banging with the big boys. The ball was coming off the rim towards him. Hate saying it but sometimes boards are overrated stat unless you sit there watching every game to see just how they are grabbing them.

True, guard rebound numbers can be inflated by things like playing in a zone, playing on a team that jacks a ton of threes, and playing for a really poor shooting team. It's pretty tough to inflate to 6.7 a game though. That kid is more likely than not just out-working and out-hustling guys to loose balls and 50/50's. I love kids like that. The extra possessions are huge.

Your point about rebounding is dead on; Red Auerbach talked many times about guys who averaged ten rebounds a game but got six of them on missed foul shots. As for Gordon, I am very familiar with his game and he would be a welcome addition to almost any program.

Couldn't disagree with you more. Rebounding stats don't lie. Sure you can have a game or two abberation but season stats don't lie. No matter how you are getting the boards, be it instinct, positioning, leaping ability or strength, a rebound is a rebound when considering season stats.

A shot is taken. Scrum of 5 guys under the basket battling. Ball ricochets out to the 3 pt line of a bounce to the 5 ft 11 pg. Its a rebound on the stat sheet but what did he do exactly?

In your scenario that would be a team reb not credited to player who ended up with the ball. Besides that does happen all the time we are looking at a per game season average. Take baseball hitting average-a lot of luck can be said to be involved-hard hit line drive right at someone, long drive where outfielder leaps over the wall are outs where as a little nubber in front of plate is beat out for a hit. So i guess we cannot distinguish between a 220 hitter and a 350 hitter because it could be based on luck and yet we do. Is Ichiro a better hitter than Cervelli? Guess we can't say?

Isn't it only team rebound if someone else touches it? Do they give team boards in college? Just looked at a few box scores and didn't see it.

Remember what Crash Davis said about a ground ball with eyes turning a guy into a 300 hitter. That's why nerds now came up with exotic stats like BABIP now :p

The only time I saw this kid play in high school was against Rivers on TV and I was not really paying much attention to him--although the announcers were all over him. The thing I remember (and loved) was how he kept banging into Rivers during dead balls. Just giving Rivers his shoulder all day...onions.

Too bad he is leaving. WKU is my second fave team after STJ, and they were going to be sick the next three years with this sensational freshman class. I just hope we keep George Fant...the kid is big-time. Watching Fant and Behanen in high school was like watching twins...both had the bodies of 30-year old men.

I'd take Gordon in a heartbeat. He has two NCAA tournament games under his belt and he has a year of coaching from one of the highest regarded basketball minds out there, Coach Harper. The guy is like a southern Dunlap.
