Forbes: "Big East Challenges"

Add to the list of Big East challenges a corporate media continuously hacking away at it. Other outlets are actually talking about basketball this time of year, especially when referencing the ACC.

Good article but reports nothing new
The "new" Big East is simply not as riveting as the "old" one
Rivalries with Creighton, Butler & Xavier will never match Syracuse and other eastern schools
Damn football ruined a great conference - now it's just a good conference

I really believe that the key to this conference really becoming great again hinges on St. Johns and DePaul becoming perennial top 25 teams as they once were in the 70's and 80's. The New York and Chicago markets would eat that up. I think that we are on our way with CM , Slice and Matt A. DePaul needs to hire a top notch coach once they're new arena in the city of Chicago is complete.

A couple of Elite 8 & Final Four appearance won't hurt either. In the last 3 years we've more than held our own in the non-conference slate vs the Football Five, but we need to step it up in March. Hopefully this year is the start of that & then getting St. John's, DePaul & Georgetown to be regular powers like they were back in day will be icing on the cake. Unfortunately a lot easier said than done.

You hit the nail on the head. I love the new conference but in order to be GREAT we need some deep runs in march. That will be great for rivalries bringing fans in not just to see the home team but to see the team that made a deep run coming in

Article doesn't say much that hasn't already been said. Big East just needs to have a good tournament showing this year so people can stop beating the dead horse.

We aren't the old "old" Big East. We knew since its inception the conference wouldn't be as good. However, what often gets left out is that most schools (aside from Georgetown, DePaul and Marquette) are outperforming expectations and the conference as a whole has certainly done better than most expected.

Teams like Nova and Xavier were never this good (yes, even Nova never had a #1 ranking before this year). Seton Hall and Providence are playing their best ball in decades. Butler and Creighton have contributed very nicely. Three years in and we're sending an average of 50% of teams to the Big Dance. That's really, really solid.

The point is we all knew from day 1 this wasn't going to be the same conference, so I don't understand the need to keep rehashing that. However, we've performed better than most expected and the future is bright.

We may not be the #1 conference every year, but every year we are are at least a top 3-5 conference and some years we will be #1. What matters is SJU will have every opportunity to compete against the best teams in the nation and will be in the running for the best recruits. We're a power conference, and a solid tournament showing will solidify that. Just think, we could've ended up like the American! They don't even have a team solidly in the tournament yet.

The article is fair. The prestige of this league rides on a couple of teams going deep into the end of March. It's easier to get good grades early in the semester. A couple of teams need to do well on their final exams.
