Last week While visiting my home in Florida, they were interviewing Jarvis on TV regarding his team and he is still the same pompous, arrogant, SOB we remember him to be!

I still wonder how Jarvis was hired to replace Fraschilla? I mean anyone interviewing him should tell he was full of himself.

True, he had a resume from GWashington but, that's a big leap to our Program at the time. And, I'm assuming FH participated in the interviewing?

Of course, there were the Ron Rutledge influences speculated at the time regarding Coaches being considered like Bob McKILLOP, as not being able to recruit 125th Street..

Well, we learned Jarvis wasn't able to recruit 125th Street either, nor too many other NYC Streets..

My recollection is Louie called Jarvis, then the coach at GW, to get his opinion on one of the candidates who was under consideration, and the devious Jarvis used the opportunity to sell himself to Louie, who then recommended him to AD Ed Manetta. I remember the contract negotiations with Jarvis' agent were very acrimonious, which should have been a clue.

FWIW the jump from Davidson to STJ would have been bigger than the jump from GW to STJ at the time. And GW had been in the dance 4 of the previous 6 seasons. Plus he not only coached Ewing, he also coached Yinka Dare. ;)

Very true.. McKillop had Coached at LI Lutheran and was known locally as a very good COACH. A fact that he he confirms every year at Davidson..
Jarvis was Ewing's HS Coach.. Yinka Dare was a very decent college BB PLAYER but, had limited basketball skills. A fact confirmed by his brief NBA career.

All true, was just commenting on that line in the original post. And joking about Yinka Dare. I don't think Jarvis' reputation re his personality preceded his hiring at STJ. I am sure I am not the only one that was impressed and excited at Jarvis' hire compared to the other names being bandied about at the time. Now I'm one of his harshest critics. Every ex coach has a few fans on these boards. Jarvis is no exception, despite the troubling path he had the program on before he was fired. If Marcus hadn't saved his job in the 2003 NIT I think STJ's recent basketball history would have been very different and far more positive.

Jarvis on the front end, had a decent, actually pretty good resume; he seemed to be polished and able to handle the bright lights, big city; Calhoun hated him and so it went.

Talk about crying over split milk, let's move on.

Is there a market for Jarvis baseball cards (LOL). I have an unopened pack. Unfortunately, they do not come with gum.

I've only been a member of redmen.com for a year so I apologize if my question seems old. Who is the person(s) responsible for the hiring of Lavin. The entire history of SJU following Lapchick has been to hire a coach with local connections on the cheap. Four years ago that was McKillop, Baron,Hewitt etc. Somebody at SJU. must have fought for Lavin which meant more money and more importantly loss of control which must have killed the old guard. This person may not deserve a statue but perhaps a plague is due. Old timers like myself, class of 62, realize how difficult that must have been.

Well, it's been said that money came from Mike Repole which allowed STJ to target way above anywhere they'd targeted before (local guys and damaged goods, doh!). Probably didn't hurt that Harrington had bigger things to worry about like the scandal and his retirement.
