February - A Magical Month!

Coach Lavin predicted that the team would hit its stride in February. All we kept hearing week after week was that our team would be making an impact in February. I doubt that more than 3% of us actually believed that it would happen.

But it is happening.

Why?

Start Obekpa.
Jordan @ PG.
Sit Hooper.
Shorten rotation.
Reign in Greene.
Sanchez off the bench.
Man to man.

And with all that's already been said, their confidence is rising with each and every game. They now have a "winner" mentality.

Links to where Whitesell is working with Chris?
Thank you

Cute but not the right answer. This Whitesell big man myth is what I'm getting at.

You have been on this for a while. I remember reading in the summer that he played a role on developing St. Louis big man. Is it that hard to believe?

Yea and he was there 2 yrs and pretty sure I pointed out no real statistical differences in their big men. And posters were hyping him like a Pete Newell big man coach.

I'm not trying to bust balls I just think throwing it out there like "Oh Whitesell improved Chris" is a little blind IMO. You obviously disagree. If Whitesell was involved in Chris' development or resurgence I would think one of the beat writers would have wrote on it already. (Of course this means tomorrow there will be a writeup about it most likely)

In general 3 things.

Playing hard right from the tip.

Playing within themselves I.e. has anyone noticed PG4 has become a spot up shooter. Maybe not the sniper we all have been clamoring for but still he's been decent. Similar adjustments could be said for a bunch of players.

Shots are falling. Because of ^, we are getting great looks. With so much talent it's great to finally see 7-8 guys doing 2-3 things they are capable of/thrive at the offensive end. When guys don't try to do too much this is what you get

I agree with what everyone has said. Two most important things that makes teams into contenders are defense and chemistry. We finally have chemistry. Yes the juniors have played together for a while but the team as a whole has not which is why early in the season we looked so lost. Players are now playing there roles which is building the chemistry, no one is going to want to play us in march . One game at a time .

First of all, I won't entertain February being a magical month on February 10th. I've been among the delusional who thought we would start winning and were the recepients of a tough 5 game schedule, but should have been 2-3. I also think there was "stuff" brewing, which is why Felix got activated and started right away, starting walkons, benching 5 star recruit, etc. Then throw in the fact that a clear rotation had not been established, mostly because key players hadn't played well.

But until we are celebrating a win at Villanova, or end the month with 7 or less in conference losses, I'm not proclaiming this month magical. This whole thread could vaporize with one bad loss Tuesday at Seton Hall, and then the mood swings will begin again.

Fair point on SH outcome.

You'll notice that the title of the thread is interrogative rather than declarative.

I doubt that Lavin's prophesy is being fulfilled because he burned black cats at midnight or burned tana leaves on the night of a full moon..

But hitherto what he prophesied has turned out to be true and posters have been so adept at analyzing what went wrong that I wanted to know why things are (presently) going right.

Thus far there have been some insightful comments on why what we see out on the court now is substantially better than what we've seen earlier on.

The question that's in many of our minds is - why did it take so long for this to happen?

Anyway - please keep them coming. They're interesting and uplifting.

And Beast - don't worry - the thread is programmed to self-destruct at the buzzer with our first loss.

I've already decided that this team is among my favorite 7-8 SJU squads of all time. They have already overcome adversity - Harrison's self destructive personality and suspension, Sanchez last straw gasp at a college career, the Jordan early season saga, multiple deaths among close family of the players, and an incredibly rocky start. They aren't a perfect team as we all know by now, but are immensely likeable kids - I hope they are able to seal the deal - it could make for a season for the ages.

Kindly notice the change from a question mark into an exclamation point in the title of this thread.

"You gotta believe!"

Ooops - I tried to change the question mark into an exclamation point but I guess it didn't work.

Moderators - can you do that?

Nice post Beast. (thumbs up!)
