Fast Break, Where Did You Go?

I thought that a primary feature of our team was going to be fast breaking up the court for easy hoops inasmuch as apart from Harrison and sometimes Greene and Sampson, there is no threat to hit the outside shot. In the games earlier in the season, it did seem as though they were implementing a fast break, even after made baskets by the opposition. I wonder if the coaches have changed the philosophy or if these kids just forget what to do.

It's easier to run when you are facing crappy competition. I am guessing that perhaps Harrison was taken to task for firing threes against Cincy. Combined with his late game foul shooting failures, the wind was out of his sails yesterday. Had he put in a typical performance, we probably still lose but its a closer game.

I like the way Sampson, Pointer, Balamou and even Garrett can run (along with the guards). You DO have to rebound to run, and Obepka is a rebouding liability until he stops trying to block everything in sight and actually works on position. I do think this can be an exciting run and gun team.

Running? Georgetown practically ran us out of the Garden. It is embarassing and doesnt seem to be getting any better

Look at Obkpa's rebounding numbers in the last few games. That criticism may no longer be valid.

Obekpa is a fine rebounder. His shotblocking is a huge deterrent to other teams inside. He's also now grabbing boards. We are missing a PF which is the problem.

He needs to secure the ball after a rebound, he seems to try to dribble too often. That is why we have guards.

You can't get out on the break offensively if you don't get stops defensively. We didn't cover shooters early on against Georgetown and we couldn't fast break when we're taking the ball out from under the basket.

I think with Jamal Branch's presence out there when we get stops you'll see our fast break be more effective. Branch's strongest quality is how good he is at identifying and throwing the next-pass-ahead after receiving the outlet.

Obekpa has really done a nice job working on his rebounding but there is another area he needs to improve in. He takes a REALLY long time after coming down with the rebound to throw the outlet pass. Sometimes he seems really hesitant or nervous about it, and time wasted throwing the outlet pass gives the opposition extra time to get up the floor and play transition defense.

I once saw Bobby Hurley Sr. speak and he puts a MAJOR emphasis on how quickly his bigmen can grab the ball, secure it, and throw the outlet pass to their guard. He says in many practices he has a stopwatch and will time and keep track of how long it takes for his big man to come down with it and get it to a guard and its a topic he frequently drills during practice.

Also keep in mind that we're now playing Big East teams, and they have some pretty good athletes of their own to get out on the break with. We also LOST the transition game to Georgetown because we got discouraged and really lost confidence once we started getting down big.

But even after a basket Branch gets the ball over half court. Phil lollygags for 8 seconds.

I kind of get a kick out of Greene's zig zag dribble back and forth thru the lane. That's a new one, havent seen that too often in Div 1 hoops. Maybe tonight at my son's CYO game though

At least when Curly Neal used to dribble around in a circle it was entertaining. He would dribble through his legs, go down on one knee, scoot around the floor and even sometimes dribble two basketballs at the same time. Maybe Greene should go all out and try this.

Why don't you guys give the kid a break. While he is not the answer at pg, he isn't that bad. Now it's just piling on.

He does love that behind the back dribble stop.

I don't think people are piling on, have you watched the games? That is exactly what he does.

Phil is just lucky the world is round otherwise he would have dribbled right off it.

Best laugh I had all week.

(Edited: Hope I didn't sound mean-spirited, but I had to laugh. As I've noted before, I love Phil's heart and his fierce competitiveness -- they're assets to this team -- but he's simply not the answer at the PG spot and, right now, a question mark at the 2 guard as well.)

I think that injured hip is bothering him more then he's letting on. It's definitely limiting his desire to run. Time for Coach to save him from his own bravery. It's Branch's time.

When you win, everyone is great. When you lose almost everyone sucks. Just saying. If we win the next two, it will be like the Prozac has taken effect.

We have hit the tipping point. We lost plenty of games the last 3 yrs. I remember when I didn't care that we lost. Times been a changing.
