Fantasy Revival of the season

In my depression about the season being in jeopardy with this really bad in conference start I am trying to find a reason to revive some SJU hoops hope after the DePaul debacle.

So in that spirit It is worth noting the following:
1) That tonight Ohio State blew out Number one Michigan State in Columbus.
2) Yesterday Number two Duke got skewered on the road by NC State.
3) This means number three Villanova will almost surely be the new number one team in the new poll.
4) So If we can get by Georgetown at the Garden on Tuesday and
5) Villanova beats Xavier at home on Wednesday then
6) We have the opportunity to play the number one team in the nation at MSG on Saturday Night.
7) At this point It is beyond all logic that we could win of course. However if this opportunity comes to fruition then this team will never have a greater Carpe Diem moment.
8) The optimist and the dreamer in me is hoping all of this happens. Stranger things have happened but certainly as a St. John's fan none jump to mind about our team right now.
9) That said if this scenario plays out I will be at the Garden rooting like hell for the hugest of upsets.

To quote Al Michaels:
'Do you believe in miracles? YES!'

Thanks for not depressing me. An 8pm game at MSG against a potential #1 team in the country is a great excuse to have a couple of Bronx Pale Ales.

I am Mr. Roarke, your host...

I still have nightmares from the last time we played Villanova in the Big East tournament. It seems like yesterday that I ventured to the Garden for the 12pm tip-off that was a complete embarrassment.

Unfotunately we were unable to execute the all important number four step of my above fantasy scenario ("So If we can get by Georgetown at the Garden on Tuesday"). Still a monumental upset victory over the number one team in the country, on a Saturday night at MSG would be a huge boost to our struggling season. Of course as a (surprisingly low) 12 and half point underdog indicates our likelyhood of winning isn't strong. If you watched Nova manhandle number ten Xavier in Philadelphia by 24 points Wednesday after our own struggles in the Garden against Georgetown Tuesday then you can't be very optimistic about our chances tonight.

That all said I will still be there at the Garden rooting like hell, hoping against hope that a miracle happens. I believe this is what diehard fans do.

In late July of 2015 through that fall I watched as my NY Mets turned another of their mediocre seasons into an improbable run to the World Series.

In 2007 the NY Giants defense was as porous as a sieve while giving up 80 points in brutal defeats to the Cowboys and Packers in the first two weeks of the season. Add in the 38 points that they gave up to the undefeated Patriots in the season finale and there would have been no sane rational analyst who would have predicted that this same Giants defense would go on the road and terrorize Romo and the Cowboys, Favre and the Packers and then play in Super Bowl XLII and dominate Tom Brady and the undefeated Pats to upend their perfect season.

In 2011 on Christmas Eve I went to Met Life Stadium to watch my 7 and 7 Giants play the 8 and 6 Jets. FYI the Giants had just lost dismally the week before to the Redskins and their playoff chances were not very good. In fact both NY teams needed to win out over the last two weeks in order to just have a chance to make the postseason. In the second quarter of the game with the Giants playing poorly and trailing seven to three and buried on their own one yard line, Eli Manning through a short pass to Victor Cruz. Magically, with Cruz breaking a couple of tackles, this little play turned into a 99 yard TD leading to a 29 to 14 Giants victory. This ignited another improbable Giants run that ended with the Miracle man Eli Manning again crushing Tom Brady and the Pats hopes for another Lombardi trophy in Super Bowl XLVI.

For me I guess this irrational hope against hope to see something magical happen when logic and reason tell you otherwise is why I go and root for my teams for better or worse.

On December 28th (just sixteen days ago) before conference play started I was hopeful for a really good St. John's season that would include an NCAA tournament bid. At that point I would have found it inconceivable that we would be sitting here at 0 and 5 at this point of our conference schedule. Add in the fact that now Lovett is gone for the season and that we will likely be underdogs in at least our next eight games and the reasons to be hopeful for the future of this season are not rational.

That all said I will be there at the Garden tonight rooting for my team to do something special, against power house number one Nova, even though my head tells me otherwise. My heart is still there and that resilent organ still is beating the tune of "Go St. John's!"

Fully expecting to get crushed tonight but on any given day.....................

The line for the Bronx Pale Ales better not be long with Nova people

I come prepared with my flask of Bushmills Black Bush Whiskey.;)

We win 83-71. Ponds goes for 40.

Tonight's Powerball powerball will also be 14. I don't want to give all the numbers, but you all can at least win a dollar with that.

The saying is On any given Sunday and unfortunately our game is on a Saturday night so the expected is going to happen.
