Extra Year

How does the "Extra Year" affect each of the players on our roster? Who will be eligible to get an extra year?

I'm not clear on the extra scholarship either. I'm not even sure if they offering an extra year of eligibility without an extra scholarship? The extra year of eligibility without the extra scholarship, would in all likelihood be taking the scholarship from the incoming freshman class. If that were the case, I suspect I might have heard more "noise" about it.

Under the previous system, I think schools/teams could have 12 scholarship players. With this extra scholarship, could a school give the extra scholarship to an incoming freshman or does it have to go to a graduating senior? Could a school give the scholarship to a graduate transfer from another school ?

Based on the above, one could conclude that I am not reading this site often enough during the day.

I don't know much about it for basketball but I have a rel.ative who just got a D1 baseball scholarship, class of 2025. I know they've expanded both rosters and scholarships awarded so that it won't impact incoming freshmen in terms of awarding scholarships. However, his family is concerned that now he will be competing for playing time against 23 year old seniors.

Moose may know the details for bball.

Currently, D-1 schools have 13 basketball scholarships. Any player currently on a roster is being afforded an extra year of eligibility, so someone could conceivably play 5 years (including this season) instead of the customary 4.

My understanding is that, if a player has played 4 years at a given school and wants to play the 5th year at the same school, the school is not obligated to extend the scholarship for the 5th year. The coach can selectively pick which player(s) he wishes to have on his roster for the extra year. If the player is not invited back, I believe that he can play elsewhere for that last year of eligibility.

The NCAA will allow the scholarship limit to be increased in order to accommodate players extending their eligibility at their respective schools.

I would think this rule benefits schools like St johns whos players are not going to the nba. I would think guys like Dunn, GWill, Earlington etc will all play an extra year if Coach wants them back.

I think you are putting way too much emphasis on this and unless the season is completely wiped out far less players than you imagine will actually take the NCAA up on this offer.

From a financial perspective of the person is going to play overseas they would be crazy to lose a year getting paid when you have limited time to make money unless that year extra here you think you can really improve your game abd I guess go to higher overseas league

Not saying you’re wrong but In your scenario why would this season getting wiped out or not have anything to do with those players decisions? It would still be the same choice between going overseas and staying an extra year.

Personally I think a decent share of kids will want to play another year of college. Especially those who are very successful college players, on quality teams, with no chance of NBA. We could have 3/4 of those guys.

If the season is played in some capacity the performances are fresh in mind. Probably showing improvement as well. If the whole season is wiped out I can see kids sticking around because they haven't been able to play. But these kids barely stick around for 4 years as it is now. Giving an extra year or the ability to transfer for free I just see kids picking up and going somewhere else whether it be for pay or another college.

The next year is going to be wild on so many levels.
