For those with interest and access. Right now on ESPN Classic is SJU vs DePaul from Nov 22, 1989.

Starting 5... Boo Harvey G, Chucky Sproling 2G, Malik Sealy F, Billy SingletonPF, Robert Werdann C.

Jason Buchanan played as well. Sean Muto backed up down low. That team lost a tough 2nd Round NCAA Tournament Game to Puke.

Team had nice size and good backcourt. Jayson Williams was in street clothes that night. I don't remember but he may have still been Prop 48 till mid season.

They did a real nice piece at the Half (1989) about St John's at the Garden. Terrance Mullin, Werdann and Sproling. They did interview outside Alumni Hall. Interesting to remember what it looked ilke then vs today. LOL Not much difference.

That was the year Jayson broke his foot. Came back around Christmas time, then re-broke it in, I believe, mid-February, missing the rest of the season.

Didn't stop him from being a late first round pick in that summer's NBA Draft.

Sprolling was disappointing. Came in with a reputation as a lights out shooter and stud.

Was Billy Singelton on that team? Believe he was, but could be mistaken

Yeah, I b elieve his technical in the tourney was the turning point against Duke.

You would be correct Boo...The original Boo Harvey hits game winner in 53-52 W for the Redmen. Chucky Sproling was never the shooter or scorer we were told he was. Billy Singleton was on the team and we had good size up front. If I remember correctly several big calls went the Dukie way in Atanta incuding a technical on BS that killed us.

St John's had the game in hand and was up several baskets. Duke was getting the calls and this was before Duke was Duke. Singleton made some comment that was addressed to no one. I think he was even looking down at the ground. The ref T'd him up. That was the worst ref "job" ever. As I recall it resulted in a 6 point swing in the score. Boo had a chance to make one of his miracle shots but didn't. The rest is mostly ugly history.

Sproling struggled except in the '91 Elite 8 run when he came alive.

But he could still give a defensive clinic to the current team.

I remember the game well. I was a 13 year old kid sitting by myself at a sports bar in San Diego. CBS had regional coverage back in those days and the only way I could watch the game was via satellite.

My recollection is that Boo pressed a little too hard that game in the second half. They should have won that game regardless, but can you imagine how good they could have been with a healthy Jayson Williams?

Meant to respond to another post, but I remember the elite eight run as well. Also ended by Duke, but that game was not so close.

Billy swore to me and friends who he knew well he didnt curse the refs or anything

funny that we came in same year and he had this huge rep for offense and yet his defense was excellent. about 6ft 4 if my memory serves me correct. Around my height. I'm 6 ft 4. Maybe he was slightly taller I forget. But he didnt lay off guys and give them room. He would get in their face when he had to and he could lock guys down. He must have had long arms because I remember him guarding some 3's at times

lastly I called this game doing play by play for wsju I think. Was this the game as MSG in the beginning of the season ? I wanna say it was one of the 1st games on the season, I was so excited I stole a baseball line during the broadcast and excitedly yelled " the shot hear round the world " :) I think this was the first of the several of Boo's last second shot wins for us that year

Also hit the game winning jumper against Syracuse at MSG in 92 with just a few seconds left on the clock.

Damn I completely forgot about that. I think that Cuse team has Lawrence Moten who I hated but he was real good

In that game (76-72) dook shot 32 free throws to SJ's 15. The next year SJ lost to dook 78-61 in the regional final, duke shot 28 free throws to SJ six. Dewk committed 10 fouls the entire game, not quite nova-esque but almost.
