Enough is enough

We need to play man to man.
Stop the zone.

We are not smart or fast enough to cover the wings.
Get Greene off the point.
Time to go with Jones and all the bigs to stop getting killed in the post.

Do something about fast little white guys hitting jumpers like Mullin.

You would think with the athletic bunch we have straight up man would be the D to go to.

Except Greene and Harrison have proven they can't keep anyone in front of them. We are a bad defensive team whether man or zone.

Last year, I got it--we couldn't play man D because we had NO bench/depth. This year was supposed to be different. Yet, it's not. Harrison, Greene and the rest of the team can be coached to play better man to man defense. It's not a rare skill, but you need to commit to it.

bottom line is we are very young and have some suspect coaching!! mo hicks and chiles and even rico may be good recruiters but have no real input on our system! we are in desperate need of a teacher!!! defensivley we pressure may too hard out front, we get beat almost every possesion at some point.....that leads to having to help and leaving out bigs out of positon! if we started to pick up at the 3 point line rather than the time line we would see much better result imho!! plus not having gods gift or jones in rotation hurts, sampson and obekpa are getting tossed around like rag dolls on the block!! its gonna be a long year guys just hope we have a juco big man with a nasty streak who wants
rebound and keady leaves and we bring in a dunlop type

I don't have a problem with us playing zone, I have a problem with THIS zone. This stupid matchup zone has none of the benefits of a traditional zone or of man defense. We switch on every screen, and rotate all over the place ... that leads to us losing track of shooters who we could easily shadow if we were in man.
Conversely, we also play the top of our zone extended out far beyond the 3pt line. Coach says this is the "man elements" of our matchup zone. That sounds all well and good, but the reality is we don't pack it in and cover the paint like a traditional zone. If we did, we would at least prevent easy baskets in the lane, and stop penetration.

But, we don't. You can play up in the face of the ball handlers, or you can pack it in and dare them to shoot over you.... You can't do both at the same time.

I agree. In bygone days when we used to play man and someone went off against us at least you knew who to talk to and what needed work. Now there's no accountability and I really wonder what they talk about after these losses. I always get a kick out of Bobby Knight's dumping on zone defense and somehow I wonder how Keady buys into what we're doing. We have great athletes who are fast but not quick. They jump well but can't stop guys like Heslip, Doolin and Archiadono. What is up with that? But for the lack of a point we might have pulled off a great upset at Nova and this board would be a much happier place to be right now. There's talent here but none of it is dressed in a suit. I sometimes wonder what Malik Boothe could have done with Heslip, Doolin and Archie. He was no burner but he was occasionally seen in the vicinity of his man.

Scary thing is we have a former NBA PG on the sidelines.

And you mentioned Malik Boothe. Ironically, Lavin wouldn't have recruited a PG like him. Would be nice to have a PG who gets in the lane and likes to dish.

I'm sure CRgreen would bring up Tyus Edney as a comparison.

Whomever we play they seem to have WIDE OPEN three ball looks , almost at will. We need to make major adjustments.

Not many Big East schools would've nor did recruit Malik Boothe. Boothe was an "ok" guard, but now it's revisionist and overanalyzing time due to a slow start. Can't say I'm surprised.

Boothe wouldn't have done anything with Heslip or Arcidiacono. They would've just shot right over him. I doubt he would've been able to deny them the ball. Those two wouldn't nor doesn't have to put it on the floor much to get off their shot. He might've caused Doolin some trouble, as Doolin couldn't shoot. That's probably about the gist of it.

I've said a few times that I thought about us using a 3-2 zone.

Nonsense. The loss to Villanova had nothing to do with the wings. Their PG hit almost all of his 3's from the head of the key off a pick. The STJ player covering the pick-er just didn't hedge when the PG came around the screen and boom, open 3. That's all coaching and learning, not a lack of speed or smarts to cover the wings. Its one small adjustment that Lavin should have been able to make 5 minutes into the game but inexplicably did not or maybe could not because our players don't know how to hedge off a screen. Hard to believe and one would think it would be easy to fix!

No, that's not the type of guard he's been able to sign. In his first real class he went after Jahii Carson and Nadir Tharpe, We heard him mentioned with Quinn Cook. And it would appear he's got one of that ilk in Jamal Branch, who needs some seasoning but has potential. Agree it's a weakness in this team but I'm sure it's not something that staff is unaware of.

It's been said in the past that Lavin likes to press and then play a zone, that's his MO, that's why he brought in Dunlap. Now that doen't mean that we can't switch it up more and pay more attention to the hot hand; that's plaugued us since last season. How many games have opposing players had career best nights against us? Pinkson and Archie in one game! The kid from Ashevilleand St. Mary's just in recent memory.

We need to switch defenses earlier and get on these guys before the damage is done.

We had a PG (Branch) at the Nova game..unfortunately he was on the bench or playing on the wing when we needed him most...I think we win if he was running the show down the stretch

We have one and a better one at that (Jamal Branch),
