Many people on this site have knocked CM and his staff during his brief tenure. While I agree that we need to add an assistant coach who has a working knowledge of the x's and o's and is willing to be an active recruiter, one look at the current roster vs. the roster that CM inherited clearly demonstrates the fact that there is a world of difference in talent level. We now have the horses to compete at the Big East level.

2018-19 is going to be a pivotal year. In looking at the rosters in the Big East, I truly believe that our talent level is as good as almost any team in our league., If we can stay healthy and keep the troops together, we will be very competitive and will have a shot at The Dance. I almost hope that many of our top 2019 target recruits wait until the late signing period to sign because a highly successful campaign could only help our chances with these kids in the recruiting wars against the "blue blood" schools.

Sedee was livestreaming it on instagram. Looked like a heck of a workout. Chris was right in the middle of it.

I know the theory of many is hope our recruits wait until spring, we have a good season and it gives us a better chance. Problem with that theory IMHO is that many top recruits and overall recruits sign early and the top programs usually pretty much fill up which allows the greedy blue bloods to put all their efforts into zeroing in on the guys we will be hoping for. For this reason I am hoping we can snag one or two of our targets early just like most teams do. Hopefully some of these guys are willing to take a leap of faith.

Couldn't agree more. Our upcoming season will have more to do with 2020 high school recruits and potential transfers than the current guys. After the early signing period teams other than those at the very top are looking at transfers, high 3 stars, and academic risks recruits.

Oh and I forgot the most important group that needs a good 2018-2019 season. The fans. Win and attendance will change quickly and although people will still grumble about Alumni Hall it will be people who were actually in the place.

I’ll take the other side of this a little bit. First, Chris’s visibility at these July Evaluation games is significant because of his NBA creds.
Second, we’ve been recruiting these kids since they were freshman in HS and are still heavily in the mix with most of them despite rising interest by top high major programs.
Third, this roster is Big East competitive, as it, and with Heron, fuhgeddaboudit.
Fourth, positive buzz will track St. John’s early into the Season.
I think we’ll get at least 1 of our primary targets in the early signing period and maybe 1-2 in the December timeframe.
And that should set us up to polish it off with any remaining kids in the Spring.
Let’s go Johnnies.

Such a nice reflection MR!
April 2015 Chris Mullin takes the reins of a single A/Div 3 team ( almost doing his alma mater and Louie a favor imo)
He now goes into 2018-19 with a legitimate major league/Div 1 roster!
Quite a turnaround in a mere three short years.
For all the criticism and cynicism, our own CM must be doing something right.

Thanks again Mark :)

It seems every year we get disappointed during the early signing period losing a player to high profile school at the last minute with a rumor that the other school offered a “special extra”.

Hopefully the US Attorneys investigation into college basketball recruiting will level the recruiting field this cycle so that Arizona, Louisville, Kansas and others no longer offer that “something extra”. The US Attorneys indictments and investigation may help St.John’s.

Right, I'm hoping the same as well. I also hope to not have to read the same typical negative reaction when we lose a kid to a blue blood program who we'd been competing with all along for a kid. I know many hope to someday compete with these programs, but right now we're just not on their level, and you can't fault us for losing out to one of those programs fairly.

Glad to hear the effort is there lately. Does anyone know if the sentiment is still that Lewis and that other 5 star he was supposedly packaging with would be much more likely to commit to a school if Rice is hired there? I remember hearing that months ago but then it kind of ran out of steam.

The way I’ve understood it is that Mike Rice being hired here isn’t a guarantee package deal with Lewis and others, but it surely doesn’t hurt.

There never a realistic possibility of a package deal. I do agree hiring Rice couldn’t hurt.

I think we have to replace of demote Mitch. We have done an admiral job on the recruiting front this summer. But, need our associate head coach out there, not MIA. Perhaps , we have already found his replacement.

Sense Mitch’s status for coming year has already been determined.
