Ellison Critique

I thought he started to come on the second half of the season after injury. He was clueless early on, but he always showed great ability to get to the rim and that he can actually be a true guard at a true 6'6" which is rare. Kid has a lot of tools. I'm excited to see what he brings this season. I'm happy as hell to have at least 4 capable ball-handling guards on the team, all of whom who can or have played the point for us.

Looking forward to seeing him play. Love his size -- especially with the undersized backcourt we have -- and his ability to drive to the basket ... although I hope that with a year's experience and physical development, he'll be able to finish those drives stronger.

Agree he should be better finishing with added strength, the usual progression for second year guys. I am particularly interested to see if he has improved lateral quickness & ability to stay on his man defensively. Do like that size though.

"Malik Ellison, St. John’s: Everyone associated with the Red Storm program raved about Ellison’s progress over the summer and he should be in position to start as a sophomore. If Chris Mullin can get reliable minutes from Ellison then St. John’s will have a capable fourth guard to go with Marcus LoVett, Federico Mussini, and freshman Shamorie Ponds."

It is what I call "Eddy Curry" time. Every year we used to get the articles right before and during pre-season about the great shape he was in, this is the year he breaks out, etc. etc. Not commenting on Ellison at all, I have personally heard people talk about his improvement, just that everyone is going to win the pennant in March. I personally think we are going to be a borderline NCAA team this year but I will acknowledge it is nothing more than wishful thinking until the ball gets thrown up.

As you have said it doesn't matter who starts. I would be thrilled if we have 4 good guards this season. An ideal situation would be each of Lovett and Ponds playing 24 minutes a game and Mussini and Ellison playing 16. Would mean all 4 are contributing which is best for the team And our development. We have a really nice group of kids who each have a story to tell and I am personally rooting for each and every one to succeed.
