Dwight Hardy Named MVP

He's not playing in the top league in Italy but it's still a great accomplishment. Italy hoops are serious.

I would be shocked if Dwight doesn't wind up in the NBA next year. As a Knicks fan if you'd ask me if I'd rather have Landry Fields or Hardy I'd take Dwight in a heartbeat. His improvement over the last 3 years will continue and I really hope he has a nice long NBA career.

I disagree. Even if he makes an NBA roster, he will be at the end of the bench. The NBA is filled with 6-4 guards. But he can have a very good career in Italy, make good money, be a star player, and enjoy living in one of the most beautiful countries in the world for the next decade.

To me, that sounds better than making a roster, with little playing time, just for the sake of being in the NBA.

Landry Fields has been the starting 2 guard for the Knicks for 95 percent of his career. He can't hit a jump shot or free throw if his life depended on it. Can't dribble and is an average defender. Hardy will be an NBA contributor in the future he has all the tools. Once teams weed out the bums like Lance Stephenson and Fields and realize physical attributes aren't everything then you see guys like Hardy in the league for 10 plus years making a name for himself.

Hmmm not like you don't have a little Italian bias Alfredo. :)

Just kidding. You're right though. I'd live in Italy in a second if I could. Beautiful country and even better food & wine and not an expensive place to live

If Europe is where he stays then I'd hop on a ferry to Pireus and play for Olympiakos. Greek basketball is the best in Europe or at least comparable to the Spanish league considering 2 Greek teams were in the European final 4 and olympiakos took the title. Acie law and Joey Dorsey along with Dwight would make for a nice American contingent plus I'm pretty sure we still don't pay taxes

Dwights MVP award in what is essentially the Italian minor leagues will hopefuly afford him the opportunity to continue to move up the hoop food chain and I wish him the best of luck but your belief that it proves him NBA ready is a bit of a raach.

I'm pretty sure almost noone pays taxes in Greece. That's one of the reasons their country is so screwed right now

I dont think an MVP award in the Italian 2nd division proves anything. Ive thought for awhile he's NBA ready because he has all the intangibles and in my opinion he's better than many guards in the league right now. Time will tell I suppose the next step is s spot on a summer league team and perhaps a lucrative contract on a quality European power if NBa teams still don't come to their senses.

Better at what? As good in a lot of areas maybe but significantly better at what? At what position? FWIW if Marcus couldn't make it to the league I just see it being even tougher for Dwight. There a lot of great basketball players who won't play in the NBA. Just saying.

I think Dwight Hardy had a terrific 10 or 12 game run his senior year, when he was clearly among the best players in the nation. He went to the hole as well as any SJU guard since Hatten, and could also nail a 3. I also think for a guard, he isn't a great ball handler, and while he proved he could drive and dish, isn't elite a trunning an offense. As an undersized 2 in the NBA not only would there be size mismatches, but he would have to be a socring machine to stay on the court because his size would be a liability. In the NBA the bigs are more talented and bigger, there is overall more speed on the court, and I really don't see one NBA caliber skill among Dwight's positives. An MVP in a second tier league means something, but to improve dramatically, he has to play at a higher level, where more shots are contested, you have less time to shoot, and if you take it to the hole, you need to make great decisions or you will eat the ball a lot.

It's a great accomplishment, but still a far cry from a lock to make the NBA.

I'm not saying he's the next Dwayne Wade but to say he'd be at the end of the bench on every NBA team is wrong. There are a lot of bad teams with bad evaluators of talent. Personally I think the league should contract 4 to 5 teams but those money grubbers in the league office would never consider that. I'm going by what I've seen in the NBA across the board the past 5 years along with the potential Dwight has. It really all comes down to luck if the right scout eyes him at the right time for his franchise.

Off the top of my head I see Dwight being a better overall player than Lance Stephenson, Landry Fields, Royal Ivey, Andy Rautins, Nolan Smith,. Those are the younger players in the league then you start talking about the Mike Bibbys and Anthony Carter's of the world and it's not ridiculous to ascertain that he could have a future in the league. Put Hardy on a well coached team like the Spurs and I guarantee we are looking at a 12 year career. Put him on the Bobcats and he will be out of the association faster than you can say "and is the nature of your trip back to Italy for business or pleasure?" Sad to say but a lot of it is luck and politics.

Any idea why Hardy didn't play in Italy's top league? Given his stellar senior campaign, I would have expected that he would have made a top club in Europe.

SIrvoo would have expected he made the NBA. GM's on both continents apparently see it differently and jobs at the highest level on both continents are a lot harder to come by than most on these boards imagine. Give him some time and lets see how he does.

Making the NBA isn't a sure thing and Ive said countless times already this MVP award means nothing to me. You seem to regard NBA scouts and GMs very highly which is fine you're entitled to your opinion but you are taking words out of my posts which aren't there sir. Isiah Thomas and Scott Layden were two recent talent evaluators for the team I can speak of so I will respectfully disagree with your high praises of NBA front office personnel.

An MVP Award is a good thing no matter which league it is in. As for why Dwight did not play in the top league in Italy, I do not know. However, I do know that some players make more money playing for certain teams in the B league than teams in the so called A league. Dwight has proved to people that he can go overseas and thrive in a difficult situation. I use the word difficult because it is not easy to take your wife and daughter to a foreign country, where you do not know the language and be successful. This shows scouts a level of maturity lacking in a lot of young players in the league. As for whether he will get an opportunity in the NBA, it depends on the situation and team.  I believe that Dwight is better than some players at the end of an NBA bench right now, he just has to take advantage of an opportunity if and when it comes up.
As for Marcus, I think that his issues with marijuana were held against him. If you are AI, you can smoke. If you are trying to make a team, it is in your best interest to be perceived as a low maintenance, solid citizen.

Walter Berry made a lot of money and was a star in Europe, and never really tried to get back in the NBA after his first stint.

I just think may be better off in Europe because atleast he knows he will play, as opposed to being practice fodder at the end of an NBA bench.

Of that group of seniors, DJ has the best chance to see minutes and be a solid contrbutor in the in the NBA imo because of his skillset.

Being that most teams have restrictions on the number of non-native players, with the NBA strike a lot of teams held out a spot in hopes of landing an NBA player.

Berry would have loved to play in the NBA. The biggest factor against him was that he was making almost $5 million per season in Europe after averaging close to 40 per game, and the best NBA teams would do was invite him to camp, and not gurantee that kind of money.
