DUNLAP

Dunlap is beginning to get some serious attention with the job he has done this year with this undermanned, underaged team. Do you think we lose him to a Div 1 job next season???????

I doubt it, but I have no doubt that Lavin wants it for Dunlap too. Dunlap is an excellent coach and deserves his own job. He's terrific. If Lavin was threatened by that in any way, he would have come back much earlier. He's doing Dunlap a HUGE service really showcasing him this year. Of course I'd hate to lose Dunlap in every way, but gotta let him fly if he can get a job he covets. He's a fantastic teacher and coach and I know that if and when he moves on to a head job, Lavin will look for a guy who has similar tools to offer as an assistant. We're lucky to have Dunlap. I hope for another year or two, but who knows? Not all too many jobs projected to be open this year, especially out west where I believe he wants to coach.

I hope he receives a great Division 1 offer.

I certainly don't want him to leave, but he has done a great job this season and deserves a shot at being the head coach at a big-time D1 program.

I think coach Dunlap deserves a head coaching job in the worst way. And I hope he gets one, even if it hurts us momentarily here at SJU.

He's a good guy, and great basketball mind. Somebody should give him a shot.

But I'm not sure that opportunity is imminent. Head coaches need to be recruiters. I think he's shown himself to be a capable spokesperson this season, but he lacks that recruiting acumen Athletic Directors are going to ask for.

Plus, there's been a few questions about his relationships with players. It's a lot easier for an assistant coach to be the bad cop. As the head man you need to be the captain of the ship, and in most cases it helps to be a so called players' coach.

I'm hoping Dunlap, like Lavin, sees St. John's as a special opportunity right now. There are a few very good building blocks in place and a chance we could contend for a title a year or two down the road. That doesn't happen for many coaches or assistant coaches.

No question Dunlap could run his own ship, but it would be nice to see him help steer this one for a couple more years.

Some guys also are better as assistants than head guys. Dunlap gets paid like a head guy at a smaller school. It's something to consider and not weight lightly. I still hope he gets what he wants, but I think he might be a tough sell for some schools. It will take the right school and he wants to go out west from all I've read.

I think he'll definitely apply for the Wichita State job if it opens. Other than that, you never know. Some small West Coast-ish jobs may open.

Somewhere along the way I read (or was told) that Coach Dunlap is the highest paid assistant coach in college basketball. My understanding is that he is paid more at St.John's than many mid level D1 coaches are paid. If that is true then may not be too quick to take a lower paying job merely to get a head job.

In any case I sincerely hope that Mike Dunlap gets whatever opportunities he wants. I wish him success in whatever he does.

Some are. But when your resume already includes TWO NCAA Championships as a head coach, THAT point is kinda off the table.

I think the biggest drawback for Mike is his personality - he doesn't suffer fools well, and I think AD's worry about the "glad handing" part of a Head Coach's job. A great assistant can resolve perceived recruiting limiitations, but fund-raising and "growing the product" are really the HC's province. And there are serious question marks in those areas for Mike.

You are absolutely correct Otis.

That may be true, but even a comparable paying D-1 heading coaching job can lead to a big time job if he does well
Not many coaches go directly from being an assistant to a "BCS" type head coaching position
Typically, you have to pay your dues at a smaller school and earn your way into a big time position
I would think that Dunlap will have such opportunities after this season
While I would hate to see him leave, it would be a good career move to do so

I've been impressed with Coach Dunlap's demeanor on the bench.

For a guy who looks so intense and who has the reputation of being tough in practices, I was concerned that he might get Mike Rice-like during games. Instead he's been under control, hasn't embarrassed or humiliated any of the players, and seems to have a genuinely warm relationship with the team.

Hate to lose him, but genuinely wish him the best career-wise.

And look what happened
The defense rests!!

You all better believe that others recognize what a terrific job Coach Dunlap has done under very difficult conditions. Take time to think about what he has accomplished this year. He started with 7 players, two quit and Amir came on board. Somehow through all of this, he has kept the team together.
He is filling in for a coach who is Mr. Personality and did not change his style at all. As CR said earlier in this thread, Coach Dunlap does not suffer fools. He is not a friend to the players, but they respect him and accept the fact that he has their best interests at heart.
He has already won TWO Div. 2 Nat'l Championships. His resume is impeccable.
Someone is going to offer him a job and then if he feels it is right for him and his family, he will take it. However it plays out, I just wish him the best and am thankful that he was here when we needed him.
