Duke Athletic Director retiring

More money at Duke I have to assume and wonder what Mike thinks of the metro area cost of living, current state of NYC and difficulty of fundraising at SJU. Would guess he gets a look at Duke, but there appears to be an internal candidate of consequence. I certainly hope he stays here.

I think he initially left because he wasn't next in line for the throne. Hopefully that's the case.*

*I should probably feel bad for saying that, because he's a good guy.

I can't see Duke continuing to be the same program after K retires. I think they'll still be a powerhouse program, but not to the same level. Not sure how attrative the AD job will be, after that happens. I'm sure Cragg thought of that.

I don't think Cragg will leave.

It would be a gut punch if he did leave though, I think he has the type of vision the Athletic Dept at SJU needs badly.

Best a.d. here since Kaiser, and considering how much D1 basketball has changed, possibly the best overall.   We are lucky to have him and if sju isn't  proactive, we could lose him.

come on. It's Duke. If he gets offered it's near impossible to turn it down. Coach K or no Coach K. Hopefully they go in a different direction

Good timing for AD to step down. Ensures that new AD will be the one to hire next BB coach vs. inheriting (even if Coach K. will have big influence). And FB coach, Cutcliffe, will be likely replaced soon too.

This thread is a good reminder to say how fortunate we are to have Mike Cragg leading our athletic department. I think he's done a remarkable job and is doing some very good things to improve our future.

Mike loves NYC and really loves St. John's, as does his wife.  He feel really comfortable with our alumni and fan base.   His immediate family does not live in the area.

The Duke AD position is a bigger job than SJU without question.  Their athletic department raises more than 10x in donations compared to St. John's.

Without question as it stands now, when Coach K retires, he will name his successor, no matter what the process is stated to be.  The leading candidates will be the guys who served as his assistants.   K will have a lot to say about the AD position.

I cannot see how MC will not be a candidate unless he removes himself from consideration.   Even if just as a courtesy I'm pretty certain they will speak to him.  He has great relationships at Duke, obviously with K, and also Kevin White.  Obviously he has proven himself capable here and that matters a ton.

His future at SJU must be secured pronto, and include a considerable raise in regard for what he has accomplished.  As I see this it should already have been on bobby's plate but should be a first order of business for Fr. Shanley.

That being said,

I believe our trio of pro sports people Mike Anderson, Mike Cragg and the new President bodes well for St. John's' sports - and of course as the sentiments herein indicate, best if all three remain and - with time/patience - continue to restore the infrastructure!
all the best

My focus is on SJU men's basketball. I don't follow the other sports, although as an alum I hope they all do well.   I also don't really know the details of the SJU AD job description, but I would expect that "overseeing a successful basketball program" would have to be at or near the top of the list. The jury is still out on which direction the basketball program is trending.  I'm sure Cragg is a lovely guy, and probably charming and relatively smart too. And while I'm not trying to be an a-hole about it-although sometimes I can't help myself- at this point I don't really give a damn if Cragg's name is mentioned for other job openings.

Obviously hope Cragg stays.

One point I would make is that taking the Duke job right now is not without risk.  Considering Coack K is near the end, there's no place to go but down.

Less risk for someone who worked there 30 years.

In terms on Monte's comments, Cragg has already proven himself far more competent and experienced than past hires,  namely Goff and Monasch.  Losing him would be a big step backwards, once again.

I guess it's all a matter of where you set the bar Beast. Like many other things, bar seems to be set very low.

Monte, you are basing your opinion on the 2-5 conf record of our team this season, and extending blame to the a.d.

MC took a very strong step in Mullin moving on after our 1st ncaa bid in 4 years.

He was able to maneuver po ast a very messy hiring process to secure a proven coach who wasn't the first choice but who most of us admit was the best we could hire.

He is respected across the country and already named to some important committees.

If you think qualified candidates from major schools would jump here for more than a cup of coffee and get better results from our basketball team in 2 years here, maybe your bar is high enough to have hit you in the head a few times.

I'm sure that everything you say about him is true. All I'm saying is that we suck with him, so we can just as easily suck without him,
so I ain't loosing sleep if he leaves. If that changes(that we suck) then I'll feel differently.
