this is probably my favorite st johns player interview EVER !!

What an insightful mature young man D'LO has grown into. Wish this kid nothing but the best in life

2 quotes that really stuck out

For all the Lavin bashers for suspending D'LO that season his own words

"A: For a long time. I texted Lav (Friday) morning, I was like, “You know what Coach? Thank you for everything you’ve done. Everything. May not say it all the time. I mean, who wants to be suspended off the team? But, I told him I was coming back from Day 1."

and lastly

Q: Why did you want to come back to St. John’s?
A: I told Lav, “I didn’t come here to just leave the school. This is a big moment. I want to finish my career here. I want to be known as the guy that didn’t run away from the problem. That he faced his problem, fixed it, now he’s still here.” And… now I’m still here (laugh).

Agree Mike. I really respect Dee & admire his fortitude to face & overcome adversity. Nice job by Serby.

D'Lo is one of my all-time fav Johnnies, even more as a person than as a player.

A lot of parallels between the Lavin/Harrison suspension and Otis/Marillac banning.

also marillac has about the same number of tattoos of diana taurasi on him

Really great responses from D'Angelo - he communicates so well, that perhaps when he puts the balls away for good he could end up in the broadcast booth, maybe here at SJU. Maybe he'd have a place in the athletic department, assisting other at risk kids.

One thing we've never heard from Lavin is Lavin taking any credit for Harrison's rehabilitation. I hesitate to call it a transformation, because it appears that Harrison was always a good kid who had some demons to expel. In this story, Lavin was the catalyst for Harrison to get help. Too many coaches tolerate pure garbage from their best players, because their livelihood is earned in W's, and termination by L's. Lavin tossed the chances of finishing strong in those final 7 games to help save this kid. Lavin who has no kids of his own and who had just lost his dad, acted like any good, caring father by being a tough disciplinarian but not throwing away this kid's future.

Lavin may or may not have a long term future in this program, but being a big part of Harrison's rehabilitation should never be lost to us whether we care for him or not.

Agreed, extremely well handled by Lavin. Kudos to him.

You could tell he really focused on this year . When asked about his goals he didn't say pro BB, but winning the BE tourney and NCAA. Great article. Harrison has a lot going for him.

Good read, great kid. I'm glad he got the chance to beat Syracuse --especially at Syracuse, makes it all the more sweeter. He also made an interesting point about the team spending more time together off court this year and that is helping them on court.

I know some will disagree with this, but I also find it remarkable that he considers the fans in some of his responses. He basically apologizes for the results of the last three years. While we were all disappointed in those results, I won't blame D'Angelo for any of that. He's always given everything he's had, even if his energy was misguided at times.

His growing up and getting himself to a better place as a person is far more important than than the team making the tournament in his second year. And if it translates to a very strong season this year, then it's all worth it for him (and for me as a fan).

I still hold the players and teams that I went to school with in high regard (from '88-92), but beyond those groups, D'Lo is definitely my favorite player. This interview just reinforced that even more. I love rooting for him and am so glad his intensity, passion, determination and pure guts and will are on our side.

D'Angelo may end up being my favorite player of all time just for his fire alone. The kid bleeds SJU red and never leaves anything on the court. He never takes a game off and if we lose, it is never because D'Angelo didn't give everything on the court. Great player, unbelievable drive and I hope he sticks around the program in some capacity, maybe even coaching some day. A guy like D'Angelo that refuses to lose is hard to find.

You know, and it's a small part of the article, but it's clear the kid is still working on himself. Even last year, as he reigned in his explosive temper, anyone near the court could read his lips after bad calls, or bonehead plays by himself or teammates. It wasn't hard, since he tossed F-bombs with the frequency of Roger Clemens throwing fastballs. But even then, with a new and improved restraint, he realizes that the cameras were on him, and he was not representing himself, his teammates, or the school well. Can't say enough good things about him, and we would all love to see him end his career here on a very high note.

On a side note, I'd love to see Harrison put in his career best game the day his brother gets to see him play in person. That would be amazing.
