Dick Vitale- Lobbyist

Goodness gracious...the man has no shame! How is it possible that ESPN allows this man to spew pro-ACC BS for an entire game...every single game that he does. If he isn't receiving some sort of stipend from the ACC for this lobbying, I'll eat my hat.
He certainly attempted to damage our program today, noting his opinion of how good Moe Harkless could be, if he had some support around him (slap!)...and later criticising SJU for having insufficient PR going on Moe's behalf (slap). He also put SJU down..as he did during the Arizona game earlier this year...for having inferior fan support (slap). It is not his place to berate our program on the air. No other commentator does it. I didn't hear him say anything about how SJU got a sour deal from the NCAA with the Clearinghouse decision regarding our three recruits...And while in the process, we constantly hear about how wonderful Duke is, It's his favorite place, Coach K is SO great...ENOUGH Dick! We all get it! Where does the ACC money go? Cayman Islands?

I thought he was fair today Doc, though some of your points are well-taken. You want him to rip Harkless's game, when he's playing like that?

Maybe you're right about the fans, but I think he just repeated what all of us on here are thinking. He can't rip me, I was at the Arizona and Texas A & M games.

I have to disagree. While he is annoying...and definitely has a man crush on Coach K...I thought that he was pretty fair today. He was praising Moe all game long, and talked about what a great shooter Harrison is.
He did get on us about fan support (6k at the WV game), but followed that with a jab at the Duke fans not filling their student section.
He mentioned Lavin's recruiting effort (even mentioning that Coach is currently in Louisiana looking at a kid named Gathers). Lastly, he praised the kids for not ever giving up during the game.
All in all, I thought that he was VERY fair.

Later on he said Lavin was out recruiting Sampaon today. Supposedly, Gathers is on an official to Baylor today so unless Steve's down in Waco I don't think he's seeing RG.

I thought he was fair, he is usually pro SJU... We need to have more than 6K at MSG when 12 million people live in the metro area...

I believe Lavin watched Gathers on Thursday.

Students should be packing the Garden for our game vs Syracuse.

There is NO EXCUSE not to show up.

This team is worth supporting !!

Let's Go REDMEN !

He also spoke about how much the Johnnies outhustled and outscrapped the Dookies in the second half.

I'm with Doc all the way on this one. Saint John's is a Catholic school, but we have to stop turning our cheek when someone smacks it. What Dick Vitale did today bordered on tampering. Did he ever make that comment - or anything like it - about Jimmer Fredette - or any other star on any other team? And not only did he say he would be better off at another school, I believe he even said (although I could be wrong on this one) "like Duke."

Yes, I have been saddened by the lack of crowd support, but there was no reason for Dick Vitale to dimish a huge win over West Virginia by mentioning that there were only 6K at the Garden - and then later providing alibis as to why the Duke students haven't been using their allocated 1,200 seats. Saint John's kids have traditionally worked at least part time while attending and a weekday game is a tough one to get to for many. Again, I would like to see the Garden filled with red and white, but there was no reason for him to call us out on it and tarnish a great performance by our team. He's the first guy who'll come around when we're kicking everyone's behind and will act like he always loved us. He doesn't.

Let ESPN know that you're not happy with partisanship.

Honestly, couldn't disagree more. Dickie V was very much in our corner today. Granted, he has an unhealthy and inexplicable love for everything Duke... but everyone knows that's part of his shtick. But he complimented our guys throughout the game, mentioned Lavin numerous times and how the program is headed in the right direction. He didn't sour our win over WVU by saying we had poor fan support. It's still a great win, and he said it several times that we had a tremendous 16 point win our last time out. But he's right to point out when we only draw 6k. He's a cheerleader he's trying to get people to come out to the games. He sells college basketball 24/7.

Dick and Brent did us a great favor today actually, any recruit watching the game came away thinking SJU is going places fast. And that was in no small part due to the announcers.

If he had it "in" for us he would've talked about the bad losses this season, that we have zero recruits signed for next season, and would have mentioned the rumors out there about coach. He did none of that.

Honestly I hope we get more of Brent/Dickie V for the Syracuse and Georgetown games coming up on ESPN.

Precisely Bill. Heaping accolades on DeAngelo and Moe is nothing more than stating the obvious for two players who combined for 51 points. Please tell me what that had to do with calling the program out for insufficient PR, poor fan attendance, and the insinuation that Harkless would be better off at a stronger program....this while fawning all over the opposition's program.
Do you think for a moment, that statements like that don't have to impact on potential recruits watching the game?...particularly coming from a guy who is supposed to know everything about the college game? Some of you should listen a bit more intently...the man has an agenda!

Doc and I haven't always seen eye-to-eye, but it's spot on. Dick V was nauseating.

Nice post Desco. You make some legitimate points. However, there is a line that even Dickie V. won't cross if he is to maintain even a semblance of objectivity. I'm not saying that Dickie V. has it "in" for SJU. I'm sure he knows Steve Lavin well, and wouldn't wish anything but the best for him.
However, the subtle digs he throws around in his analysis clearly point to me that he has an agenda that supports recruiting by the ACC..and some of the things he said today might give pause to someone considering St. John's. It's an opinion...nothing more!

I'm very glad you're back.

He is nauseating and states the obvious most of the time...Brent Mussberger was in our corner...Stated that, with a "big", we would have won the game...I think comments like that would be taken in positive light by our prospective recruits.

No way to argue the fact that he clearly genuflects at the site of Coach K, Cameron et al. . .When the good times start rolling again for us, nothign will compare to the Garden

They will. Problem is half will be Syracuse fans as I'm sure we didn't buy up those seats quick enough.

Dickie V. is a has been, an aging announcer who never was much of a coach. As an announcer, he has never been a great game analyst or evaluator of talent - he's simply a big personality.  If he wants to knock our fans, he has a right to - after last year, and with the promise of this years crop, our attendance should be much better for MSG games. I look forward to every game, not ever expecting a win against top competition, but knowing on days when we put it together and keep guys out of foul trouble, we can whip some pretty good teams.

What will truly be nauseating is that next season and beyond when we are a top ranked team, the "diehard" SJU fans will crawl out of the wookdwork proclaiming their love for the team. If you love basketball and SJU, NOW is the time to be at games, because quite frankly you are missing some pretty good basketball by staying home.

When K retires it will be a Nightmare there. He's truly irreplaceable.

Got to disagree Doc. He took a well deserved shot at our fans for not showing up. Several times he mentioned how Lavin was out visiting Sampson and Gathers and how we were only a big man away from winnning this game. And he mentioned how Mo has improved since the beginning of the year.
