Depth

Everyone is wondering about depth with Orlando/Marco in limbo and Gift/Felix also in limbo as a result. This is a tough week with 4 games and 3 in 4 days to boot.

Take a look at the Big East to date and the first couple of teams that we are playing or could be playing. Again its 1 game for most teams which are often blowouts so skew things. Counted anyone playing more than 7 minutes as an arbitrary figure.

Detroit- 1 game, 11 players (3 played 7-9 minutes in 30 pt blowout)

Charleston- 1 game, 8 players
Baylor- 2 games, 10 players
BC- 1 game, 9 players
Dayton- 1 game, 9 players
Colorado- 1 game, 9 players
Murray State- 1 game, 11 players (Don't even think it was D1 team)
Auburn- 1 game, 8 players

Big East:

Cincy- 1 game, 11 players (blowout)
Uconn- 1 game 8 players
DePaul- 1 game, 9 players
Gtown- 1 game, 6 players (Add Otto Porter for 7 who only played 6 mins due to injury)
Lville- 1 game, 9 players
Marquette- 1 game, 11 players
ND- 1 game, 7 players
Pitt- 1 game, 9 players
Prov- 1 game, 7 players (Add Council for 8 who only played 6 mins due to injury)
Rutgers- 1 game, 9 players
Hall- 1 game, 9 players
South Florida- 1 game, 7 players
Cuse- 1 game, 7 players
Nova- 2 games, 9 players

Thanks for providing some context Moose. Certainly the coaching staff has all of the information to make the best decision considering all factors, but I would be nervous playing Detroit with only 7 scholarship players available. Still a winnable game, but since it's a key OOC game against a tourney team from last year would really be an inopportune time to play short. Arguably, depth is our greatest asset and we're potentially short of it in our first game.

Great analysis and discussion point.

When I mentioned that Lavin said at SJU's Media Day eventually (later in the year) he would like to get to an 8-man rotation, my head was chewed off.

But let's be real. None of those teams with the short rotation in their openers had one of their Top 3 players benched/ineligible. Orlando is one of our Top 3 players.

I think Lavin will eventually settle at 9 guys and Marco has to be one of them because we do not have consistent outside shooting.

Another point I forgot to mention was this is why I don't get all tied up in grabbing 13 scholarship players. You will never play that many significant minutes. (Cue CrGreen for some exception ;) )

Sanchez posted something on his facebook in spanish about something done 3 years ago that will hurt him. See JJ. Doesnt sound good.

Honestly if he was only going to have one year of eligibility, it is not a huge loss for the team. We were not going to make the tourney this year so at least CO and Jakar will get even more time and experience. Sucks for Sanchez of course, but for those of you who will start crying over this it will be an over reaction.

"We were not going to make the tourney this year"? My friend, not only WERE we going to make the tourney this year, but we ARE going to make the tourney this year, with or without Orlando.

Even WITHOUT Orlando and Marco there aren't 68 teams with our level of talent. Just aren't. We still run top 75 level talent AT EVERY POSITION and more off the bench.

RSCI: Sir Dom #35, Jakarr #40, D'Lo #47, Branch #52, Obekpa #67, Amir #73

Add in a 10pt 5reb senior former JC All American (Gift, if Orlando doesn't play), plus two true EXCELLENT "sleepers" in Greene and Jones. And, of course, I believe both Orlando and Marco WILL play this year.

Given THIS coaching staff, and THAT level of talent, there is simply no way 68 teams are better. NO WAY.

We have grown accustomed to thinking that one recruit will make or break our season.

I hope the outlook brightens with Sanchez, but if it doesn't we will still put a lot of young talent on the floor.

Nice to see this kind of depth in the program again.

not making the tourny? OK cancel the season

I believe Murray State just lost their second game against Holy Cross. If I'm not mistaken their first loss was to Old Dominion. We could be playing them on Friday.

Not my point at all. My point was I don't think Sanchez was the difference between going to the tourney or not and if he could only play one season I would rather CO and Sampson play as much as they can.

I feel we are to young and will not have enough offense. I hope you are right, but I am disappointed you did not use some example of a UCLA team that has no bearing on on this situation as an example.

On a positive note, Jones so far seems like a pleasant suprise and I think CO in addition to Sampson are future NBA players.

One advantage of having 13 scholi players is it helps offset injuries, inelligibilities and transfers.

I remember a certain UCLA team that resembles ours. It's a ways back so I'm not sure if you guys will be familiar with them, but does anyone recall the 2011-2012 UCLA team. More talent, did not make the tournament.

CR, we have not run a good offensive set all preseason, and we all know they didn't run one last season. We were one of the worst shooting teams in the country last season and aside from Marco there's no indication we will be significantly better this year from either the foul line or behind the 3pt line. We are still undersized in the front court, and our most experienced players have 1 year under their belts. Your confidence in this team is mind boggling.

I'm not saying we won't make the tournament - I hope we do. It will be a great season for us fans if that happens.

But there's little to no on court evidence that that's about to happen.

Having 13 players often leads to transfers.

He mixed up Morgan St and Murray St. Morgan St lost its last two to ODU and HC.

Its a catch 22. Part of the decision should be made on the likeliness of the recruits qualifying. 2 years ago there were so many academic question marks Lavin made the mistake of not recruiting more players.

Even if we lose Sanchez, we have more than enough quality scholarship players and will will likely be going 10 deep with talent this season. Christian Jones was a fantastic contingency pickup and for all we know every bit as good or better than Marco. Jones has been awesome early on and hopefully continues to improve.
