DePaul

Out of curiosity (and this may have been discussed recently enough, IDK) is there a way to remove a team from the league? I have no clue and I'd guess there must be a very strict procedure--if any. My thought being that if this new dude at DePaul amounts to yet another dud, is there a way to replace them? Since day one they have been nothing but a leech--they are constantly worthless. I am well aware they are a sister school, etc. But isn't it well past time they did SOMETHING for the conference--or go away? How much worse could IL-Chicago or Loyola Chicago be? ANSWER: none.

DePaul isn’t being dropped. The Big East didn’t drop Seton Hall back in the day when they were just as bad for their first ten or so years in the Big East.

Temple’s football program was the only program that was dropped back when the BE sponsored football and that wasn’t due to just their lack of success on the field, but lack of a real home field and lack of commitment (funding, facilities or general support from the Temple administration. These are things Depaul does not suffer from (excluding lack of success on the court. I don’t know what the mechanism would be but there are not losing the Chicago market nor would unless there was some BE/ACC merger.

Ok. But fwiw, Loyola-Chicago is a better program these days and I'm sure would jump at the opportunity. The conference would not LOSE the Chicago market...as if DePaul does much there....or ever really did.

Instead of forcing a team out of the big east who does nothing for the league adopt the big ten method. Ohio State will get at least twice as much tv money as Rutgers.

To be fair for the first time in a long time Depaul has a decent coach. While it hasn't shown in the record, they have a better team than in recent years and several members of their core players eligible to return, I'd give Holtmann two or three years before assuming he can't make some strides there.

I did suggest we wait a couple of years to see if this guy can do something...and I meant it. BUT if he is yet another stiff, how long does the conference wait?? It's been over 40 years since they've done ANYTHING, and their best years weren't even in the Big East. Look, we gave the Big East six years of Norm...and a few others that didn't work. But no other team in the conference has been a consistent-year in and year out-bottom feeder like DePaul. I believe if this new dude doesn't work out, it should be looked at by our commissioner--if there is an avenue. Let's not forget, they get money for being in the league and frankly, they simply don't deserve it. Maybe this new guy can make something happen. But we can keep the Chicago market without DePaul.

As been posted many times. It’s the amount of eyeballs in the market, not necessarily the amount of eyeballs that follow the program. That’s why Rutgers was so valuable to the Big Ten. There cable network got into the NY Metropolitan Market and the amount of viewers, no matter if they were Rutgers fans or not. That is the key.

While Loyola Chicago has had more success lately and Sister Jean has a following, when discussing BE expansion, they are not one of the teams ever mentioned. You hear Dayton, St. Louis and others but never them. So now we want to trade Depaul for them?

We didn’t drop Seton Hall in the early days for Rutgers (who eventually got in because we expanded more for football reasons than basketball). Not happening now.

And while we haven’t been constant bottom feeders, we haven’t exactly been setting the conference on fire the last 20 plus years or so either.

heck we've had a couple of our own fans I think say in the past 20 years we should drop to the A10 or something like that.

what's that expression ? Something like don't throw stones in glasss houses or something like that. It's bad juju !!!!!!

Great discussion, during the glory days of Norm Roberts many fans were womdsring if the Big East would drop our beloved Johnnies. Thankfully that never happened. De Paul has a nice new arena Wintrust( i believe not far from Campus) a new coach i guess they are safe until the next tv contract.

Wintrust is actually ~ 8-10 miles away from main campus up north. It's by Mccormick convention center down south.. it's like a 30 min train ride.

I do not have a copy of the current Big East Bylaws but I have a copy of the 2011 Bylaws which required a vote of three quarters of the Directors. Each School had a Director on the Board.

Assuming the 2011 Bylaws are similar to the current Big East Bylaws (which they may or may not be) it would require a vote of 9 schools to terminate DePaul.

Because DePaul would vote against its ouster then it would require a unanimous vote to terminate StJ's fellow Vincentian institution.

Recall that in 2004 StJ's President "Suits" Harrington threatened to shut down the men's basketball program if it was not "cleaned up"

Harrington, the school president, said he would recommend the elimination of the program if it continues to embarrass the university.

 Hmm
, I wonder what Harrington had to say about Chang's testimony that she had sex with Father Cahill, and if true, what was her deal with Harrington?

Incredible gall and hypocrisy from a priest who was taking "free" leisure trips, cash in envelopes, 2 high end Patek Philippe watches, free custom tailored suits - all under the guise of being from Taiwanese donors. There were so few auditing controls that all were being paid from a credit card from taiwan , fully reimbursed to Cecilia Chang because she submitted statements in Mandarin or Cantonese.

Then of course was the high 6 figure university loan to his chief of staff and Harrington business partner Rob Wile to purchase a home I believe overlooking the Hudson River for a renovation job. Wile solicited at least one 6 figure loan for the renovation from a board of trustee member, and then showed no inclination to repay it.

Put all that on the scales of justice vs a group of college kids disputing payment to a hooker in Pittsburgh. Harrington was outraged by group sex, but I would also question why he had invited Rob Wile to accompany him alone on caribbean beach vacation. (Wile instead brought his girlfriend).

This no good creep then lied and said he gave the cash to the poor. Yea, right. Why the heck he is still a Vincentian priest is more embarrassing than a really bad decision by former players in a Pittsburgh hotel room.

Before anyone here suggest DePaul drop.out of the big east, just remember we are one "bargain " coach and a group of big NIL backers from being back near the bottom.

Well, Wile did get me tickets for Cardinal Dolan's installation, including the after party. After that, I got nothing, except total agreement with what you say.

And under his watch, there were some shenanigans going on with tickets somehow making their way to third party sites, courtesy of someone in the athletic office. I know who, but won't say since I'm sure you know. At a game at UCLA, I had to buy tickets on my own since I couldn't get them from SJU. I'm sure they had loads of requests for a game 3.000 miles away, right? A friend of mine did the same thing, bought tickets for that game behind our bench through Stub Hub and guess who was quite surprised to see him sitting in the row behind?

OK, the soccer team won the national championship, pretty much the only sport Harry cared about.

We’ve come a long way.

I think it’s more likely we get poached to a bigger conference than DePaul getting shown the door

Thank you for the clarification, was it closer to De Paul than the old Rosemont Horizon ?
Good point. Rosemont was up further North about 15 miles from campus but not needing to cut thru heart of city if going by car.
I never lived in Chicago but have traveled there a bunch for work and been to both McCormick & Rosemont centers many times. Chicago is a fun city and luckily I've not experienced the crime. Heart of city always good.
