Dayton Number 1 ?

Saw that the AP designated Dayton as the end of season Number 1 . Anthony Grant Coach of the Year and Obi Toppin as Player of the year . I don’t recall seeing Dayton play this season , so I have no idea on how good they were and the selection of Grant and Toppin respectively . I did note that Markus Howard finished in the top 5 of the Player of the Year vote getters but , Myles Powell did not . Any thoughts on Dayton and their season ?

Dayton's only losses this season were in overtime against Kansas and to Colorado by 2 points. They had a special year, with a good chance to win it all. I feel for them and schools like San Diego State. It's quite possible they may never have another shot like they did this year.

They had a great year, but were denied a chance to win it all. Unlike UConn, they would have been a seamless fit in the Big East, and unlike UConn, they would have been in the conference for good, not just using the conference to rehab the basketball team and jump to another conference when the opportunity presents itself.

Hard to argue that. Does anyone know why they weren't considered, even the first time around? Was it a geography thing with Xavier?

Dayton finished #3 in the AP ranking, but still an excellent season.

For those concerned about UConn leaving (won't happen anytime soon given the $30 million exit fee and lack of interest from other conferences), then it's always good to see schools like Dayton and Gonzaga at the top of the rankings. Imagine a Big East with the current 10 teams (#1 in NET) plus Dayton and/or Gonzaga. Not so bad, is it? :)

Eventually I think we're going to add either Dayton or Gonzaga, or possibly both. Schools like St. Louis and Wichita State wouldn't blow my mind either. It's all about TV money, adding other geographic markets only strengthen the Big East's negotiating power.

The lack of interest from other conferences may keep Conn in the big east but the penalty would have no bearing at all. They can make the penalty back in one year in the football conferences and they would fight paying the penalty in court and probably end up paying only a small portion of the amount.

UConn is now an independent in football & not being courted it seems.

It wouldn't have a bearing, but the Big East would benefit by getting $30 million and then could add another high profile school (or 2) to replace them. Imagine if the ACC takes UConn tomorrow and the Big East counters with both Gonzaga and Dayton (plus $30 million). Why would that be so bad? UConn agreed to the exit fee because they know they aren't going anywhere anytime soon.

Also, Maryland years ago fought the exit fee because contracts were written differently back then and they were a founding member of the ACC. I believe teams pay exit fees in full today (as UConn currently is doing with the AAC).

Right now yukon's football program sucks. It make rutgers look like Clemson in comparrison.

Also, ACC football has slipped in recent years. This year it was worse than the American in some regards (fewer ranked teams- Clemson and maybe 1 other in the 20s). The last thing they'd want now is to add one of the worst FBS programs out there just to piss off the Big East.

If the ACC (or anyone else) wanted UConn they would've taken them at any point over the past 7 years. Sometimes the Big East can simply get a win, such as when we locked ACC/B1G out of MSG for Tournament week. Or when Nova beat both those conferences in the national championship games. I don't like the "UConn will dominate and leave" narrative because it seems insecure and not in touch with reality.

I was going to pick Dayton winning it all. Probably was going to have Gonzaga in finals with them. Probably was putting FSU in Final Four if they weren't in brackets with either of those teams.
