Daniss Jenkins Award

Great night for St John's Athletics last night. St John's Athletics Awards dinner. Zuby won most improved basketball player. Evening began with Mass and the dinner. Most of the school's 400 varsity athletes in attendance. The camaraderie on all teams was palpable and overall our athletes are very good students as well. Lots of love in the room

Congrats to all of our athletes and to the athletic department that makes it all work to support and nurture these kids.

Nice event. I remember the days it used to be held at Terrace On The Park in Flushing Meadows. Much more formal event; after the awards, the DJ cranked up and the athletes let loose, all dressed in their finest. As for me? Alcohol was served back then so I will leave it at that.

Back then the athletes rented limos to arrive. Then after the after party either they went to NYC to party or head to a bar Glen Cove Rd . It was fine china and silver service dinner. Each major award winner got a private table for his parents and friends. It was more like a NY wedding reception with pre dinner cocktail hr for adults and a non alcoholic with hot dorves for the athletes. And fan since 65 you will remember the yearly pranks at the expense of Frank Muessig including a guy dressed as a gorilla 🦍.

Did they give out the Rick Pitino Award for the athlete with the "Least Lateral Quickness"?

That should be an Annual Award at this Dinner.

He would have to attend instead of being at a Knicks game
Only Zuby and Daniss were present from men's basketball as far as I could tell. All other sports were extremely well represented. St. Thomas More Church was packed for mass and the floor of CA was set up as a banquet hall.

Not sure why our men's basketball team did not come out in force. Maybe Alumni Hall has a historical perspective. Maybe NIL puts kids above the college rah rah feel good stuff, maybe a whole new roster including 5 or 6 23 year olds don't have the same sense of togetherness that other teams such as lacrosse, soccer, track, or volleyball have. All I know is that when a kid's name was called to win an award, their teammates erupted in screams, shouts, and whistles.

College basketball maybe never will be held in the same regard as those other sports. For 18-22 year olds, college is one of the last places to act like a kid. Last night had a "We are St. John's" feel to it. Good for the nearly 400 athletes in attendance. For maybe the one night of the year ALL SJU athletes have a chance to celebrate together. Too bad our bball players mostly missed it.

Three of the returning players were at the Knick game with their coach and I doubt they would have felt comfortable declining his invitation.
