Could Felix Play Some PG

Former friend & fellow poster Moose had an interesting thought he shared with me. ((Before hanging up on me after I wished him Happy Thanksgiving)

Could Felix play some point to free Mussini & Ron M'V up for some perimeter shooting? I realize Felix scores often working the interior, but with his speed could he take guys off dribble & penetrate & dish? (Or score) Mussini obviously can shoot & Ron seems proficient from baseline. Felix' handle may not be perfect, but neither is the team. Not suggesting doing this all the time, but in spots when we struggle offensively. If this is a poor idea, blame it on Moose.

I like the idea. Felix has blow by speed, and can finish or dish. Mussini has had problems doing that, due to both a lack of quickness and strength. We are getting very little penetration, leading to a lot of forced threes instead of open look threes. There is no risk to trying this, as we are not playing for a post season berth anyway.

Whether you call it playing the point or not, I thought we did that for a time yesterday. Balamou started many of his takes from the top of the key area; had a few assists off that set also.

I'd be worried by his loose handle against better defensive teams. Help defense will be able to rip him. But, against poor defensive teams, it is a viable strategy.

If you mean bringing the ball up the floor, then I'm a bit hesitant for him to run the point. If it means, allowing him to play PG once we get into a half-court setting, then I'm all for it. He's done that already (as, Logen mentioned). He's shown he can do a good job facilitating, once we're in the half-court.

Felix at the point would make Hardy look like John Stockton. I'd be more comfortable with Moose playing the point.

I think we are getting caught up in traditional labels here. Last year, the offense often ran through Dom Pointer. In Mullin's playing days, the offense ran through him. For those that didn't turn the sound off, Bill Walton mentioned that Mullin has been preaching that defense starts with denying penetration. Mussini has been having difficulty beating his man off the dribble and dishing or finishing. Felix, with his limited lifetime minutes, surprised me with his ability to beat his man and finish. He also had a few assists when the defense broke down responding to his penetration. Felix is a high level athlete. He can't do much on the perimeter, so let's give him a chance to use his athleticism to our advantage, especially since no one else can do it.

Felix helping out by bringing the ball up or running the offense on occasion would be fine. Having him play the point with a point guard hounding his dribble however would be problematic

Dom did not run the offense - he basically blazed upcourt on the break, and did not run the half court offense at all. We had a wonderful 4 guard offense.

Mussini is miscast as a PG because we have no one else reasonably who can bring the ball up vs. pressure. Ron M. would be the next best choice. I do think this will cause him to struggle, but overall he will greatly improve as a player by becming a better ball handler and having to work twice as hard to get free. Over the next 3 years as a SG and a supporting cast, he will have a much easier time.

Felix does not have the handle to run an offense or bring the ball up vs. pressure.

Mulln didn't run the offense at SJU - MArk Jackson and Mike Moses did, allowing Mullin to move without the ball.

No one ran the offense when Lavin was coach. His teams had no point guard. That was the problem. And it may have been 30 years ago, but I still remember that much of the offense ran through Chris. much like it did when he played point forward at Golden State.

As for Felix, what was suggested was using Balamou as the guy that can break down defenses through penetration once we get set up in the half court, not bring the ball up against the press. He showed sufficient handle against Indiana to get to the basket. One or 2 dribbles is all it takes. He has no problem with contact, has high energy, and is an explosive athlete .

For me, it's also about protecting Mussini. He will be more prone to injury and burnout trying to do too much. as opposed to being an off guard, which is the role he will have here the rest of his career. No one on this team is close to John Stockton-that we all know. We look like a better team with Felix on the court, especially when his athleticism can shine.

1. My comment about our "wonderful" 4 guard offense was sarcasm. 4 guards, not one point - well maybe Branch - well, maybe not.

2. I fear Felix bringing the ball up with a lot of pressure would be a disaster. Felix is a small forward who posts up, and is more effective handling the ball for short bursts. A PG runs the offense from 20 feet and out, where Felix has zero value.

3. Mussini may get banged up, but like Ben Affleck's brother in "Good Will Hunting" I think he's a tough little kid. Plus he's Italian - don't mess with us.

Mussini and Ron can bring the ball up the court. Felix in the half court however can use his speed, athleticism and driving ability to open things up for Mussini off the ball a bit. Pretty sure Mussini had 1 assist combined in the two games vs. Vandy and Indy. We need him to score and for now its best without the ball in his hands because his shooting is his best trait. If Felix can keep a defense honest in the half court and drive and they collapse like we do all the time then there are shooters out there waiting.

Now if Felix can only stay healthy.

All movie references are appreciated. You had me confused for a minute, as I was thinking Affleck did not have a brother in the movie. Then it hit me that you were referring to his real life brother.
