Fairfield/Iona on ESPN right now, MAAC title game.

I have a cousin who is a freshman at Fairfield so pulling for them. Close game.

I watched the game and it had me thinking. This was a #4 seed vs #6 seed for a shot in the NCAA tourney. These one bid conferences play a full season worth of games, yet the bid to the NCAA tourney always comes down to a tournament at the end. Why is it decided that way?

In eight seasons at Iona, Tim Cluess has went to 5 NCAA Tournaments, 7 MAAC title games, & won 20 games or more every single year. How does this guy not have a high-major job?

He has a point

Boy, if Mullin doesn’t hurry up with this turnaround, The pressure to get Cluess will increase. You know he would take the job in a heartbeat.

Would it be possible for Tim Cluess to be Assistsnt Head Coach with CM? It may be unworkable, but is it insane? In effect, wasn’t that Dunlap’s niche with Lavin?

Tim has been a head guy for a long time now and would never take a step backward. Dunlap when we got him had never been a D-1 head coach and was still working his way toward it.

Agree. An impossible notion that goes against human nature. And unworkable with the egos involved. But damn, I luv the idea of it. Not a snowball’s chance in hell.

Zero chance at 58 Cluess takes an Assistant job.

Going to the Wagner game tonight w some Wagner alum.. Going to be a tough night if they win. Won't hear the end of it.

BIG TEN Signage and advertisement still over the MSG area 1 day before Big East tourney. Embarrassing and disgraceful if not taken down today.

He makes $500,000. There seems to be a very easy way to get him to take an assistants role. Also, Why is it that he's never gotten a major conference job? Does he have a bit of the Mike Leach syndrome?

I don't know about that, but he has yet to win a big game outside of the MAAC (admittedly, hard to do), and does carry the stigma of the biggest lead blown in the history of the NCAA Tournament (which, I guess, somebody has to have).

0-4 in the NCAA tournament, so no magical run to make him known nationally. That probably hurts him, too. Watch, this will be the year they go to the Sweet Sixteen, because, IMO, this is the weakest of his 5 NCAA Tournament squads. They did a great job winning the tournament, but let's be honest, the field collapsed around them. It's nice to be the fourth seed, and never have to take off the white uniforms.

Not saying that any of this disqualifies him from a major D1 coaching job. I'm just offering some possible explanations as to why this has not happened.

We should look at his assistant Jared Grasso. Grasso has been with TC every step of the way and does most of the recruiting. He's arguably the best mid major recruiter in the country, would be great compliment to Matt. Also solid X's and O's. Hire him as associate head coach with a promise to take the reigns in 3 years so he doesn't bolt. Has had trouble getting HC gig coming out of the MAAC and blocked by TC at Iona, so it's a win-win.
