Conference Play

Here is my thought about whether and how this team can compete in conference play this year:

We will need DOGS to win games.

We know that Champagnie, Posh and Wusu are dogs, and also produce.
I have a high degree of confidence that Mathis is a dog, but I suspect his production may be variable until he settles in.
My guy O'Mar Stanley is the very definition of a dog, but he has a way to go before he's a consistent producer.

That's five.  To play the way Coach Anderson wants to play, he's going to have to find at least three and probably four more.

Pinzon and Stef Smith are more gliders than dogs, but I think they have at least some dog in them, and probably enough to get by.

The big questions are Soriano, Nyiwe and Wheeler.  I've seen Soriano try to be a dog at times, but it hasn't translated into enough production.  Nyiwe is still a black box - he has a very interesting skill set, but I need to see more.  Wheeler has been a huge disappointment in the dog department.

It isn't a coincidence that thus far we have both a lack of clear dog ability in our bigs and a lack of rebounds.

I hope Coach gets a bunch of dogs for Christmas.  Otherwise we may get more lumps of coal than we'd like in conference play.

Good post!  Dog can be taken in different contexts. Some of our guys are really dogging it at times can be interpreted in a very different way. I also think of Dirty Water Dogs(the Hot Dogs they sell on the street)

We need pit bulls, German shepherds, and rottweilers.  Come to play or stay home.  Coach is not looking to finesse people to death, the players had better be prepared to fight and compete from the jump to the final whistle.  Thus far not enough of them have.

Well, since the Big East is a "dog eat dog" conference, we're definitely gonna need some big dogs to compete. Is there a Glen Robinson III ?

We need mean nasty junk yard dogs.

Guys that will dive on the floor, burn their knees, blue-collar, lunch pail guys.......fill in the cliche. Hustle players, effort guys.

Over my span of 50 + years of watching and rooting hard for St. John's we've had the Charles Oakleys, Anthony Masons of the BB world, scraping, clawing, fighting for every loose ball, making guys pay for driving the lane, taking charges when it hurts, doing everything possible to help us win. Think Ron Artest, Jayson Williams, Anthony Glover, Charles Mineland, Dee Harrison, DJ Kennedy, Matt Brust, etc.. the guys who left their heart out there on the court.

I am getting the feeling that CMA will play the junk yard dogs, and the rest will be catching splinters on the bench. We don't see practices, he does, and if you aren't a junk yard dog in practice, you won't get to shine in prime time and that is how it should be.

Ah, The Power of the Dog.

The Temple of the Dog, you heathen.

BrookJersey gets it - we need this team to channel its inner Anthony Glover or Charles Minlend. They gotta compete harder than they are.

Not comparing players to dogs or animals even if the phrase has been used in the past.
Players are constantly calling each other dogs meaning it in a good way.

People are compared positively to non-humans all the time, gosh, your handle is Beast of the East.

The Heart of a Lion, I think is what Coach K complimented Ron-Ron after his performance in the OT game at the Garden.

Our own Looie said something about "one day a Peacock, next day a feather duster".

My wife told my daughter she was making Puppy dog Eyes.

Tom Cruise was Top Dog before he was Top Gun.

Chris Mullin was an eagle-eyed outside shooter.

:) ;-)

Nope.  No good.   From this point forward only botanical or inorganic references permitted.  Rocks, trees, weather, etc only.
No, I like the dog reference. Ya know, when one of our guys throws down a jam over an opposing player, we can say "he took it to him doggie style!!!".
