A post by Boo Harvey got me thinking:

Will Dunn be on next year’s team? Gets an extra year of eligibility, right?[/quote]

Next year is going to be nuts in college basketball. Programs pushing kids out and poaching kids from elsewhere is going to be off the charts. With regard to Boo's point about Dunn, if he has another year it seems to me that he could maybe wind up in either of those categories. Anderson might want the roster spot, or another program might want an experienced point guard.

Does anyone have a complete handle on the transfer and eligibility rules for next year? Thoughts on players who might be coming or going (here or elsewhere)? It's going to be the Wild West, I think.

It will be Wild West and certain programs play this game better than others and obviously not kosher in many instances.

Rest assured the sharks are already looking at transfer targets under radar with communication to AAU folks, advisers and in some case parents. I honestly think many teams who struggle this year, but have some solid kids, will be preyed upon. In some ways this is what killed the Robert Morris programs of the world, but now it is worse with no sitting out. You really need a recruiter adept at transfer game to replenish roster. It isn’t something that any assistant coach can do.

Love the college game and cut my teeth as a kid watching Tony Jackson era Johnnies as a kid with my dad. Trends like transfer mania and elite crooked teams rarely getting nailed is slowly eroding my interest. It seems like a system more rigged than ever.

I've already got paranoia about who we might lose next year. Not only those who want to leave due to concerns over playing time, but those who get "recruited" to transfer to a blue blood due to their success. Could get ugly quickly.

Exactly & suspect feelers out already, just my opinion

I had this conversation at SJU a couple of weeks ago. We are certainly concerned about big program poaching other programs. The illegal contact of players already at other schools has been going on forever, and the new transfer rules will only increase that sort of thing.

Consider a program like Kentucky, who could have 5 incoming top 15 players but still need an experienced upperclassman point guard to run the show and provide stability on the court. Suddenly "recruiting" widens to include every single college program. Where would you rather play the point, Butler or Kentucky? It's only a short drive between the two.

I pointed out in my conversation that it could work in the opposite way as well. Say things don't go well for a Cuffe type of player at Kansas. He's not playing as much, maybe not getting as many touches, or maybe being recruited over. An assistant like Matt A., who is skilled at forming relationship in the transfer game that makes him a great recruiter, can pitch that at Nebraska, Cuffe would be the focal point, get 20 shots per game, and elevate the team to the dance.

It's not as appealing as the reverse, going low to high, but there is a lot to be said about being a top player for SJU in the Big East as opposed to being the 8th or 9th man at Duke, no matter how far Duke goes.

Cautiously optimistic that the tide goes both ways.

FWIW if you draw a straight line from the SJU campus to midtown manhattan, my guess is it is only 8 miles or less. Forget about MSG, a zillion college kids yearn to be in or around NYC which has cause Brooklyn and parts of Queens to explode.

I’d venture to guess the rules would help us land better players from better schools stepping “down” a notch than other schools trying to steal our talent for the most part. I’d love to think we were so talented that others wanted most of our players but I think this is more likely to work I. Our favor.

Chances of SJU getting good players being squeezed out for incoming 4*&5* freshmen.

Additionally you have a huge number of players allowed to stay for a fifth year if they like, along with a full class of incoming players.  I was wondering if there had been any announcement of expanding rosters for one year to accommodate for the potential of up to 20-25% more kids on the rosters.  Probably has but I can't recall.

I would agree...think it could ruin interest as it would become the amateur version of NBA
