College Athletic Stipends

The article says its going to cost $6 mill per year. That'd be 600 athletes. Certainly more than the hoops and football teams.

That's a lot of money for a college kid. And what about equity? $10,000 goes a lot further in cities like Austin, Waco, Ames, and Stillwater than it does in cities like New York, Boston, LA, and DC.

@darrenrovell Update: Texas is NOT proactively paying its players $10K/year. AD was asked what school would do IF NCAA lost O'Bannon

@darrenrovell Told Texas AD Steve Patterson was posed the HYPOTHETICAL of what they would do if they were required to pay athletes. Not actually doing it

I'm not sure about that, once you get past housing and the cost of electricity, some of the basics (food and clothing) are about the same. A drink may be a little less than Austin, but I think the drinking age is 21 there anyway. Twenty five years ago the SJU stipend was the same $300, so adjusted for inflation $800 per month isn't exorbitant.
