Per Andrew Slater:

"Top ranked PG Cole Anthony '19 heard from IU, UNC, Duke, Kansas, Oregon, UCLA, Maryland, Stanford, UNLV, Zona, Nova, UConn, Wake, Louisville".

No mention of St John's. Have we thrown in the towel on him?

Never been much of a connection. Elite player with better choices.

He is clearly a highly coveted prospect
I just thought that, as a local kid, we would give it a shot
But it's smart not to waste our time or resources on kids we're not likely to get

I agreed until the mention of Uconn, Wake and UNLV. By the time he graduates we will be a better choice than those schools. We rarely have a strong connection with Molloy.

If you don't understand why UNLV is on the list you just ain't paying attention. Maybe Wake's on for it's academic reputation and UConn for it's success the past 30 years.

What kind of world are we living in when a member of the 1991 UNLV Running Rebels would send their son to Duke?

I have no problem whatsoever with the site giving him attention as we are here to discuss ball and he is a key local recruit. I would have a much bigger problem with the staff if the staff was still pursuing him when the interest is not mutual but thank g d that is not the case. They are focusing on Monte and 72's newest favourite player Joe Girard(i) who would be a very good 4 year fit as opposed to a 1 and done at a position we should be set for in 2019-2020 with any of Ponds, Simon and Dixon.
Again, smart recruiting by the staff.

I was facetiously replying to the Paultzman's comment that he is an "Elite player with better choices".
UNLV would never be considered a better choice in my book.
We rarely are a consideration for Molloy players because we are literally in walking distance. We also never seem to sign the children of former players. From LeRon Ellis to Maverick Rowan, we may be on an initial list or even reach out but are never a real consideration. That will include another Rowan soon with R.J. Barrett.
Sadly, most alums have no interest in having their offspring attend SJU because their memories are of a very different and parochial school. I have had relatives attend NYU, Villanova, UCONN and B.C. All could have attended SJU but I too never strongly suggested SJ be their choice. An 18 year old needs to be happy with "their choice".
That said we do a poor job of selling the school to the children or relatives of alums.
A nephew that ended up attending NYU was very interested in St. John's. He lived over 50 miles from the school and was offered a full ride as staight A student. He was going to major in Sports Management so I referred him to Tony Missere who was the chairman of the Sports Management program. My nephew sought his advice and told him about the scholarship offer but also a partial scholarship offer from NYU. To my surprise he recommended and convinced him to attend NYU. My nephew is in the business now but I was pissed with Mr. Missere because he thought so little of his own department. We are.......

Ahh Professor Missere !!!

He gave your nephew great advice. I sat though his History of Sport class as a freshman and it was an absolute joke. I could have gotten an A when I was in 6th grade. Best part about his class was hearing all his stories about basketball @ Pratt, his real estate investments, best Italian restaurants etc.

Sad part was, many others in the program were just as simple... " Intro to Sports Medicine" by some adjunct who was a Chiropractor in Queens comes to mind.

Intro to Coaching class with legendary coach Lou Rossi was epic though. Learned all about NYC point shaving scandal and Jack Molinas.
What a nice man.

Can't believe I spent $ on those credits.

Hopefully they have tightened up years later but seeing how many players major in it, I'm not so sure.

He loved his time at NYU but has always been a St. John's fan. His younger brother went there too and his next door roomie was Magic Johnson's son. Every time I think of Zach Brown I see Magic's son. :p

And I your east coast sense of humor. STJ vs. NYU? He needed a meeting to decide? ;)

And of course he's still and STJ fan. As hard as recent times have been for the program they still could beat the Violets any year they wanted. With apologies to my buddy egghead who played for the shrinking Violets in the mid 80's.

Lol, I needed this wave of nostalgia. Professors Missere and Rossi were, if nothing else, highly entertaining but I think that the Athletic Administration (hereinafter known as Sports Management) program did its best to introduce students to professionals in local pro teams and get them a chance to showcase themselves individually. The money for the credits would seem ill spent, where it not for "Bernie "A"" introducing me to alum and employers with the Mets, Islanders, USTA and others.

It was a difficult decision for him because he is a huge redmen fan from the days I would take him to games and he was getting a free ride while two other siblings were also in college. He had an idea that Missere was running a shit show but was more interested in Law school after graduation. My point basically was to point out that having ties to the school, whether UNLV for Cole or St. John's in my case means little to kids with many options. In the end it is their decision to make.
