Funny, Jay Wright first 3 years at Hofstra were losing seasons, and it wasn't until year 6 that he got an automatic NCAA bid, which he did also in year 7. His first 3 years at Nova, 52-46.

Tom Pecora was left with a team in such bad shape that they went 34-56 his first 3 years before going 69-26 over the next 3.

Nova wisely gave him very nice bumps without him asking after winning 2 championships. He could name his price anywhere else, but is happy at Nova, PLUS very secure with little stress that Kentucky, UNC, and UCLA jobs would bring.

First off, Villanova and St John's are totally different in terms of endowments. Villanova has spent a ton on new buildings including a big makeover of the Pavillion. Their fund raising campaign goal of $600 million (initiated in 2014 and double the one they initiated in 2004) raised $150 million over the goal. We've never had a campaign like that in either size or in exceeding the goal by that much.

St. John's uses a lot of its endowment to fund scholarships and grants to students. It is also the bank account that allows the school to make capital expenditures and fund all non revenue producing activities (such as non revenue producing sports). While something as small to you as a $20 million commitment to a basketball coach for 5 years, there are other priorities.

On that subject, I've given Chris Vaupel , our very capable Vice President for Advancement and University Relations, grief about how our alumni does not support the school, but he acknowledges that our giving rate of about 6% is in line with similar schools)

I was surprised to see that our endowment is as high as $700 million, but cannot compare to Villanova, who raises more money and commensurately can spend it a little more freely.

You're right of course. The endowment has more important things to deal with than basketball, but being a fan if they said they were going to eliminate the law school so they could hire Mark Few as coach, I'd say sign me up! :D

110% of alumni are living so 6 percent giving may actually be a little light.
 
So, let me see if I have this right. This, our sixth consecutive failed basketball coach hiring, will have cost the school $2.5 million to buy out an assistant coach, $4 million to buy out the head coach and could cost upwards of $2 million to buy out the contract of a prospective incoming coach. This is above and beyond the actual salaries for work performed. Madness....
