Coaches Carnesecca & Kaiser / Bruce Beck

Bruce Beck gushes when he speaks of St. John's. He publicly thanks St. John's for helping to teach his children the value of service. HE had said that although he went to Rutgers, he bleeds St. John's red. He has established himself firmly as an intimate part of the SJU family and has now emceed the President's dinner in such a warm, professional, and obviously prepared way for many years running. For those of you who aren't aware, Beck is Jewish, and like many of you who are, totally embraces St. John's in its Vincentian mission.

Bruce went to Ithaca I believe, where he majored in accounting ironically. Truly one of the nicest guys and sportscasters you will ever meet. I used to know him pretty well - I was a camper for several years at the sports broadcasting camp he runs in Montclair with Ian Eagle and Mike Quick. All three are standup guys.

Bruce and I were in same fantasy baseball and basketball leagues a few years back. You won't meet a more genuinely nice and humble person than Bruce Beck.

JSJ,

Hasn't Beck been given an honorary doctorate from SJU? Has his name ever been mentioned as a possible commencement speaker? There are certainly bigger names, but not many that are as passionate about SJU as Beck.

Did Francessa half-ass it one year or cancel at the last minute? For some reason that's how I recall Beck getting the gig -- replacing him or stepping in at the last minute and doing a great job.

St. John's is lucky to be associated with Beck. Class act all the way.

I think his final year was the year of the Phantom scholarship and he wasn't asked back.JSJ would know for sure

I think he made some remarks towards Norm that weren't well received

From what I understand for the last couple of years that he did the event. Francesa would waiver on his commitment to emcee the event and not RSVP until very close to the event date, which annoyed the school to no end.. At the last one that he did, he showed up at the Waldorf at the black tie President's Dinner in a crumpled brown suit (literally the same suit he broadcast in for hours). He was dreadfully unprepared, and all of his comments were off the cuff and off the mark. He played it like it was a small time event, not a night where SJU shines. He spoke as if he knew nothing about the school, and instead reached for jokes about Looie and the basketball program.

Beck by comparison dresses elegantly in a black tux, and speaks passionately and sincerely from prepared notes about St. John's religious mission to the poor and to students who may otherwise not receive a private college education. He makes everyone in the room feel great about their association with St. John's by expressing his own love about his own affiliation with St. Johns.

Beck has the job as long as he wants it. He is so far superior in all ways to Francesa, it's difficult to see how Mike would ever be welcomed back in that role.
