Coach

Not definitive, but it looks as though St. John's coach Steve Lavin won't be on sideline for season-opener tomorrow against William & Mary.

I have no concern about Lav not being on the bench. You have a Hall of Fame coach and coach D that can coach the lights out.
My concern was that in the past two weeks he did not even make a physical appearance on campus. A couple of hours with the kids here or there, etc.
I just hope his surgery went as well as publicized without some of the side effects that his doctors at Sloan claim they minimize. Having a radical almost always causes side effects that are very minimal after 5 weeks. Rudy Giulinani was running the City of New York after four weeks and he had seeds and 5 weeks of radiation.
Again, I just hope his side effects were not too serious but knowing scores of folks that have had PC, Lav should be 100% O.K.

Forget about basketball. I hope Lavin is doing well and he should take as much time as needed and as long as his doctors recommend. I have to admit to being a little concerned. It does seems all indications were he would be back before the season started and now he won't. Get well Coach.

Just a hunch but first game I see him would be Arizona.

Just a hunch here too, but I'm guessing UMBC. I think he wants to be back for Arizona, but does not want to be a distraction for that game.

If he doesn't make it back for UMBC, my guess is that he sits out until St. Francis.

Ouch. He is obviously not recovering at the pace we all hoped.

Hopefully, it's just slow going, and he will be allright.

I went through a procedure for prostate cancer that enabled me to bounce back at a much faster pace. If anyone knows the type of surgery the coach has undergone could they kindly pm me? Thanks.

I personally didn't have any pace in mind at all. When he's better, he'll come back.

I meant "pace" only in the fact that we were all hoping for a quick and speedy recovery.

Never meant it as a formal timetable.

My concern wasn't his presence on the bench to coach......it was having a presence with the this young team a few hours a week from a morale POV. I think the urinary problems with radical prostate surgery can be quite different for different people but since Lav lives in the West Village, making a trip to Jamaica can be an ordeal if you gotta go pee! I was hoping coach D and coach Keady would take the kids into the city for a two hour workout at NYU which is just a few blocks from Lav' home. Oh well!

Coach's health is all that matters, that is life, the other is sports; may we all keep him in our prayers for a good recovery.

Keady says Lavin "laughing more, walking more, getting back to normal lifestyle." Still no definitive timetable on his return. #stjbb

I had the pleasure of talking with Coach Keady at the Coaches vs. Cancer event in Albany last week. He stated the same thing plus Lavin is doing better had a set back but is looking to get back real soon. BTW, Coach Keady was amazing, he spent like 15 minutes talking to me.
