Coach Sabbatical

Since it looked like it helped our team next year having Coach Lavin out recruiting during the regular season is it possible for any coach to do that ?

Coach Lavin was not on the bench for medical reasons but can a coach decide to stay away strictly for the purpose of recruiting ?

Just curious.

Thanks.

I don't agree that having Lavin out this year helped our team -- not in the slightest

You don't think it helped in getting Jakarr back in the fold?

Do you think it also might have cost us Gathers?

Lavin did the best he could under the circumstances but I think the best scenario would've been for him to be on the bench.

Well Lavin did get Branch by sitting next to him during one of ther games. If he was coaching, it may not have happened.

Possibly. But, I think it had more to do with the involvement of his brother (someone you never heard of during or prior to Rico's initial verbal).

There were some negatives (losing Gathers; bad press, per recruiters) and positives (Branch and Sampson) during Lavin's time away from the bench.

I don't think any coach would strictly stay away from the bench for the purpose of recruiting. But, I'm sure some coaches will now take advantage of the situation, if they had to be away from the bench for an X-amount of time.

I don't know any of the specifics with regards to any of the recruits. I suspect that Sampson's re-commitment was based on, among other things, his relationship with Coach Lavin and the players. If anything, I would think that Lavin being sick was a potential deterrant for him, but who knows.

One could also speculate that if Lavin were healthy the whole year, we would have landed someone else great that we don't even know about.

My only point with respect to my initial post is that ten times out of ten we are better off as a program (recuriting and everything else) with a healthy and active Lavin on the bench.

he got all of them aside from I think lindsey and GG before he even coached a game basically

Greene and Gift verballed after games were played.
Pelle and Amir saw only an exhibition game.
Like you were getting at the rest verballed before games were played.

ha, i was close. I knew 2 of them signed after the season

IMO having him out recruiting helped us considerably more then not having him on the sidelines hurt us.  Of course the complete results of his recruit efforts may not be known for quite some time.

I agree with CR..incredibly wierd.Do you think if Coach had a choice in this, he wouldn't have been on that bench coaching the kids he loves? Boo, you kill me. LJSA sums it up. Obviously, you have never been diagnosed with cancer cause given the choice.. hmm coach or chemo.  Wasn't llike he said, I am tired of this coaching stuff, I am better off being on the road.. INSANE!!! drop it already!

Coach made some lemonade out of citrus scenarios.
-can't coach: hit the road and recruit
-Mo goin' pro: "hey kids, see what we did with him!?"
-six scholarship players: "okay, keep playing and learn this conference and this game" Unparalleled trial by fire experience gained.

But I don't see how letting the head coach play "GM" on the side for a long stretch answers anything. If healthy, he will handle both the bench, and recruiting. Dunlap may run some practices, but Lavs needs to be there.

But don't forget how good of a recruiting class he nailed down while coaching last year's seniors. It's not like he had some advantage by not coaching this year, just made the best of the situation. I think this year just shows how effective he is at sealing deals with recruits. And the balance is on its way. Next year, a mix of sophs and freshies, with a Juco or two and a senior in God's Gift. He won't need to recruit a half dozen kids a year soon enough.

I do sometimes think posters on this board underestimate just how deep in a hole this program was in prior to his arrival. Yet, if you look at what is taking place...program is in good hands. Solid recruits coming in, tremendous individual and team player growth. And no more 9 players graduating at once with nothing to follow. The decommits and ineligibles, deal with it. Sorry, but when you're dealing with top 50 prospects, that's just going to happen more. I'll take some one-and-done studs to go with players like Greene, Sir'Dom, etc. when they are in their third and fourth years.

And this is not even deserved yet. This is a program with one tourney appearance in the last decade. But I think there is an understanding that something is truly being built in Queens right now, something maybe even "special." But as a fan of this program for 25+ years, this is as good as it's been in a long time when you take it all in as a whole.

Peace y'all.

Once last comment about recruiting: Can we give an assist to D'Angelo please? Not only was he helpful in landing branch, but JaKarr's comments about the sticking with the guys, knowing that Mo was basically out the door, shows the potential power of D'Angelo's presence. He really is the leader of this team in my opinion, and is as important of a recruit as Mo. Imagine if this kid made some noise at the next level and he continues the word of mouth on this program?

Glass half full? :)

Thanks for your post. Among Coach Lavin's many admirable traits is the ability to make the most of any situation - and how wonderful he has performed on all fronts in thee two short years, with many obstacles, with an inherited mess etc.

Good for Lavin, for SJU, for the kids and for we fans. We are fortunate. Very fortunate. And I think he's here for the long haul.

all the best

Agree totally.
And this is one of the dumbest thread topics ever.
