Two Lavin remarks of special interest.

(1) When asked if we were destined to remain on pins and needles until April before finding about commitments Lavin explained that the players we have targeted and concentrated on had elected to wait until their season was before making announcments of any sort.

(2) In response to a question about Amir Garrett's progress Lavin's face lit up and he went into an enthusiastic diatribe on how his hustle and impact on a game reminded him of UCLA's Earl Watson and Cameron Dollat. Coming before today;s game these remarks made Lavin look like the Delphic Oracle.

Nice going enjoy the feedback

.

Thank you for the update. I hope we can hear something sooner rather than later. I'd like to say its reassuring, but some of these guys could still be announcing for other schools after their season. Some commits can't come soon enough.

The very astute basketball fan who asked about Amir Garrett was me. I therefore take full credit for his play in the last 3 minutes, including the 2 rebounds, 1 blocked shot, and awesome move to the hoop with 9 seconds left that gave us a 3 point cushion.

Were you wearing a mask Beast?

I ask because the gentleman who posed the question was a lot better looking than you ordinarily are.

I got a lot of beauty sleep last night :)  To quote Abraham Lincoln, who was called two faced by a political opponent, "If I had another face, do you think i would be wearing this one?"

It was great to see Coach Lavin make an appearance at the R/W. Also, congrats to Jersey Shore Johnny's contingent that won a raffle for an autorgraphed Lavin basketball

Good for you Beast and thanks for your assist in the win today. We'll take it.

I walked away with the impression that we should set our expectations for "later" not "sooner" as QCRedman stated.

I asked if St. John's was planning to schedule a game with Purdue so that the team could play on Coach Keady Court.

Coach Lavin said they are working on a couple of things, one of which may be a home and home with The University of Washington, although this is far from being etched in stone.

Thought Coach looked great. Was very, very enthusiastic about the future of the program.

He said he thought having young men from all around the country and not just NY was good for the program. That said, he still wants to get his "fair share" of the BEST players from the tri-state area.

Saw NY as a great location to recruit from and that he is committed to going after players that can help the program and return us to national prominence. Said he saw NY as mid-way between California and Europe and that he wasn't going to be limited in his geographical reach.

Talked about the rich history of St. John's basketball and how we are still in the top 10 of all-time wins despite the rough time we have had the last decade or so.

Mentioned that when he was at UCLA had kids from Texas, North Carolina (Rico Hines), Northern California, as well as the best players from the Los Angeles area.

Said Amir and his family was very happy at St. John's. Didn't see him leaving for a full time baseball career in the near future. You can tell he really likes Amir and his attitude. Think he's going to be a very good player for us. Was very impressed with his progress especially considering that he didn't join the program until Dec. while everyone else was at St. John's in June taking classes.

Excellent turnout at the club. Very well run event.

Beast.......sorry I missed you!

Very well run indeed. Congrats to Annemarie Carey and everyone else involved.

Excellent Summary, JSJ. You covered just about everything significant about Lavin's comments, except this, which was nice to hear:

Lavin thanked the fans present, and said he appreciated the true, loyal fans of the program that have stuck with the team when it isnt having a great season. He said it's easy to come out and support the team when they are a top ranked team heading to the NCAA tournament but it takes a real fan to show up and support the team when it isn't winning. Classy comments by coach.

He also mentioned that many of us are very aware of who is being recruited and knows many of us follow Adam Zagoria. It's almost as if he reads redmen.com - well, maybe he does.

i was going to approach you JSJ, but you were with family as was I, and I didn't want to interrupt you. Next time, for sure.

Wish you stopped by. I was with my wife, and her cousin's son (who received a baseball scholarship to Rollins College) and his high school baseball teammate.

As long time fans, I'm sure you felt the same way I did.

That is to say, to be appreciated for staying loyal over the last decade when things have not been going well for the program.

Everyone left MSG today feeling great and very optimistic about the future.

i aint to proud to beg... Please jakarr and chris.. You see this team. You guys and branch are the missing pieces to the puzzle. There is nothing like owning nyc!! Come own the garden

Coach was very impressive as usual. Let's hope his vision of the upcoming recruiting class becomes a reality.

Most important it seems that coach Lavin is set on being here for a good while and building things. I think that all the fans need to hear that. Unlike the spoiled UCLA fans, SJU fans are accustomed to REAL disappointment. We've had hard times for a long time. Bad luck and problems have been a fixture for the last two decades. I have zero doubt that Lavin can get it done here. I just want to know that he's committed to building his career here and finishing what he started.

He can really have a monstrous effect on SJU basketball. Lavin is a fan of literature, poetry and the like. Wooden already wrote the UCLA book and it can't be re-written...ever. Lavin is one of the few guys who I think is smart enough at engineering a program that he can write his own book. His own book at a program rich in history like SJU. We have never win an NCAA championship. Lavin finishes that chapter, and he writes his own book and cements himself in college basketball history. To do that in New Your City is really something special. I just hope he's committed to stay. He'll win big.

Glad to hear people were encouraged by the event.

All valid points about LAvin, but I would add that he is a competitive guy who still has a lot to prove. At UCLA, the shadow Wooden casts to this day is huge, and Lavin never got credit for what he accomplished and plenty of criticism for what he didn't, ending in his dismissal.

At SJU, he has begun a legacy of rebuilding a program that was in the depths so long that revival was not only an uncertainty, but a growing improbability. It appears he can have as much success here as anyone, including Lapchick and Carnesecca, and the potential to do more. Accomplishing more will put him on revered ground in SU history, and he will be regarded as one of the best coaches in college basketball. I think Lavin knows this, and as a career objective, is not walking away from here anytime soon.

Agree with that. He has a chip on his shoulder. If anything, him taking this year to get his health in order is actually probably more of an indication that he in it for the long haul. A coach auditioning for another job isn't doing that. Goes to shoe how stupid some of these rumors are. No doubt he has a lot to prove. Im starting to think his time off is an indication that he's not going to jeopardize the long term plan of success just to get back on the sidelines too soon.

I think he knows he can be a legend here and live a great life in arguably the best city around. It's our nature as SJU fans to doubt that and always expect that the worst is happening to is becaue for a long time it has. I think he's dispelling that now.

Guys, let's not over analyze his motivation. Coach didn't need to come here last year...he wanted to and he was fired up about the opportunity. When was the last time a big time coach wanted in here? He saw something in this program and its history and he wanted to bring it back to prominence. Why would anyone think that this would change? His health is what's keeping him off the sideline and from us getting some recruits. That's it. When his health is better, he'll be back to coaching, and great recruits will follow him again as they've done throughout his career. We are in really good shape and if he can get a few kids with size to sign up in the next two months, then we'll be in great shape.

+1. Whatever happens this (2012) year it is what it is. Lavin is going to kill it for 2013+14 like he did his first year. We just need some size to carry us over for a year or 2

Agree completely. Future is bright, big things on the way. Just got to be patient for now
