Can confirm that St. John's baseball coach Ed Blankmeyer is leaving St. John's to take a job with the Mets, per source.

Ed Blankmeyer will be manager of the Cyclones and extended spring training coordinator.

Great guy. Was introduced to him by Jack Kaiser. Told Ed I was the only undefeated baseball coach at St.John's. Of course it was for one game against Hofstra. Kaiser was sick so Louie asked me to take the undefeated freshmen team at Ebbets Field. Larry Bearnarth,Shremeta, Russo and Wolf were on the team. Phew, couldn't afford to lose.
Sorry to lose this coach.

While a huge college basketball fan, baseball has always been my favorite sport. As I have had some more free time the last few years, I have been fortunate to catch a few St. John’s games which if you get the right weather are a lot of fun. St. John’s has a fantastic program. It’s not easy playing college baseball in the northeast. Best of luck to Coach Blankmeyer and best of luck to the new coach when they are chosen.
huge loss for the program.
Yes, my instinct is that they won't recover from this long term, but the program did go seamlessly from Jack Kaiser, to Joe Russo, to Ed Blankmeyer, so there's hope, IMO.

More than likely the best baseball coach in the Big East, and over his tenure I believe the best baseball program in the conference as well.

Anyone familiar with the program know if an assistant in the wings is capable?

AC Mike Hampton rumored to be under consideration.

While a good move and congrats to him, a huge loss for the baseball program at St. John's. Good luck Coach.
I assume at age 65 he just wanted to do something a little different. Not like he’s going very far as he’ll be in Brooklyn. Although, some of those bus rides to places like State College or Mahoning Valley aren’t the most fun. Good luck to him.

don't think this was the direct cause but I spoke to him after conference realignment happened but his opinion was that even though the change was good for the athletics in general particularly the basketball program, the changes in the bigeast (conference realignment) was not good for the sju baseball program.

Mike Cragg's very classy reaction to congratulate Ed is a wonderful sign of what a terrific manager Mike is. A great manager is truly happy when even a key employee leaves for a better opportunity.

Mike, is the real deal as an AD and as a person. We are in great hands.

It would be nice to see his next in command get a chance if that is feasible. The program has been really humming the last few years. I would expect Cragg to ask Blankmeyer for input. I don’t think there is anyone at St. John’s more qualified.

That would be this guy, Mike Hampton. No, it's not the same Mike Hampton who pitched on the Mets pennant winning team in 2000.
