Cleveland Guardians Name in Limbo?

I started a new thread because the previous one about nicknames was locked.

There is a possibility that the Cleveland Indians may not become the Cleveland Guardians because there is a ROLLER DERBY team already in existence called the Cleveland Guardians. The roller derby team owns the clevelandguardians.com domain and some related social media monikers.

As the article states, things may eventually work out for the baseball team in the end but you would think that the geniuses that chose this name would have done their due diligence and made sure that the name was free and clear or at least worked out any potential issues before making a public announcement. I guess not!!

I mean, who isn’t familiar with the Cleveland Guardians of the ARDL?

If this has any legs, the umm, Cleveland baseball franchise can buy the domain and the name for an amount that would be a very nice payday for the roller derby team owners.

In the early days of the internet, domain names such as Delta.com were owned by small companies.  The airline saw value in that name even though Deltaair.com or whatever they were using cost nothing.   some folks tried to snatch up names that were only associated with one company - say IBM.com, or Pfizer.com (for example).   I'm not sure how those played out in court, as they were taken primarily to ransom them to those companies who would rightfully want them.

My guess is that the Guardians name will prevail, and the baseball team formerly known as Indians will spend a few dollars to make that happen.

Yeah those were crazy times.  Lots of guys got rich squatting on domains, some got in trouble.  You also had to prove the domain was active to prevent the powers that be controlling the intertubes from giving obvious rights holders eminent domain like transfers as well.

We paid pretty good money for Australia.com (and 1-800-DownUnder) back in the day at my old job, not major US Corp type of money but still I'm sure the guys selling them were happy with their return.
