Where was everybody?: Shame on St. John’s fans. Shame on local college basketball fans. You had the possible National Player of the Year, Creighton’s Doug McDermott, making his Madison Square Garden debut and red-hot St. John’s playing its best basketball of the season, and only 6,739 people decided to show up.
Those who did get to the Garden were loud, energetic and into the thrilling nail-bitter. Still, when did we get so soft around here? The game tipped off at 7 p.m., and the weather is no excuse. It barely snowed.
Here’s hoping next Sunday’s showdown with Georgetown at the Garden, again set to start at 7 p.m., draws a far better crowd. St. John’s deserves it, the way it is playing these days.

Seriously, felt the same way as I was in attendance yesterday. We need to do a lot better from a support standpoint. Only the lower bowl tickets were sold, not to mention it was 65% filled from what I saw.

I understand this is not necessarily a college basketball town, but it would be noble of the fans to actually make a conscious effort to show up ala the 2010 season.

I know this is covered on another thread...but 45 dollars for nosebleed seats isn't going to get it done. Don't blame the fans...

I 100% agree! Tickets to the nosebleeds should be $10 just to get people in the door who want to attend but don't want to pay to sit close.

FWIW........

I've seen on some MSG websites that the lowest price tickets for St. John's basketball games are either $30 or $35.

The service charge (which is an outrageous profit center, IMO), if you order online, gets you to $45.

Also, FWIW, student tickets at Carnesecca are $8.

First he calls out the coach, then the fans. This guy has ONIONS

Its easy for some pimply faced "journalist" to call out the fans for not attending a game when probably wakes up at 10 o'clock, eats a bowl of fruit loops and then writes his column in his sweat pants. For the normal working folks, a 7 o'clock start on a Sunday night is not a desirable start time.

And - yes - I did go to the game. This guy needs some common sense however.

I agree it was a cheap shot, and I was there too. Couple of beers pre game, drinks at the game, hour train ride home- tough wake up at 6 30 yesterday for work but I did it.

If we lost that wake up would have been worse.

Indeed esp since I was drinking Kettke and Club at 10.50 a pop all game at MSG ! Broke, hung over , and tired- but at least we won! Made it easier

I thought the article was pretty good. And although Sun night games are tough, our overall attendance has not been good. Especially compared to Creighton, who averages over 20,000 a game.

Interesting Gonzaga is 94th but sold out every home game. They need to build a bigger arena and make more $$

Moose, thanks for sharing that. Very interesting data and I don't know yet how to interpret it. My initial reaction is that of the top 20 or so teams in attendance, they all seem to play in small, rural areas, where they may be the only show in town. But then that may not be correct because I don't know exactly where these schools play. And when I say "where" I mean exact location. In a city? Suburb? Rural area? And quite honestly, I don't have the interest, desire or time to research all that! ;)

One thing I've always believed is that with nine professional sports teams in the NYC Metro Area, college sports will never have the attention that it does in those top 20 to 25 attendance areas on this list.
