As I continue to clean out my home & office - you know the three piles of " stuff" to discard, give away, keep - I came across pubs circa 1984-84! Here's in part what was said:
1.SJU was chosen to make the Final Four along with GTown Illinois UNLV;
2.no one has more talent than the BE conference;
3.SJU has Chris Mullin America's finest swing man and Walter Berry NY legend & best JC in past decade;
4.BE using 45 second shot clock;
5.pre season AA first team Mullin Ewing Malone Tisdale P Washington - second team Len Bias - third team Ed Pinckney;
6.honorable Mention AA Bill Wennington (one of my favorites!)
7.newcomers of Impact SJU Berry, Shelton Jones (I wonder where Shelton is?);
8.top 40 HS Players included Boo Harvey, Michael Porter;
9.prior season record 18-12 (5 OT losses) returning starters 4, Louie's record 340-127;
10.players not returning Jeff Alken 10.6 ppg 6.6 RPGs (met Jeff at a game a few years ago - no one knew he was there - my "pet peeve" = announce the returning players please Mr New AD!!!)
11.returnng roster players Antonelli W Glass M Jackson Mike Moses R Stewart Wennington - and Chris Mullin;
12.newcomers Berry Jones T Bross R Rowan Shurina;
13.for Chris Mullin -
Where do we start? Led Redmen scoring, steals, second in assists;
shared BE co- player of year w/Ewing;
571% fg .904% ft; Olympic gold medal college team member at 12 ppg;
intelligence and shooting set him apart;
Pitt Coach Roy Chipman: the most intelligent player I've coached against;
Louie: "he's completely dedicated like a monk";
Reads defenses like a basketball version of Dan Marino;
Another coach:"many players do what comes naturally, Chris does what works!"
Marty Blake NBA College Scouting Director:"he's about as good as anyone who's played the wing position in a long time!"
other quotes of note:
Forget the Knicks and Nets, SJU will be the real show stopper!
Rollie Massimino
"With Berry & Mullin they have to be a great team!"
Seems we are back to those vintage days, at least heading that way!!
Good to savor the best we had and the best to come.
Enjoyed perusing what I discovered in
my files, hope you did, and wow are we ready...appetites whet...
we are fortunate, for sure
all the best
pardon any typos
