Chris Herren

Great guy who fought his battles and is giving back. Works out several of my friends & all having nothing but praise for him 
 
 That was a very good documentary.

I first heard about him when he was at Fresno State. There was a special that was filmed that followed that team. Rafer Alston was on that squad also, they had a lot of talent. I would love for someone to hunt down that special so I could watch it again now after seeing the Herren documentary.

They also made one of those specials about St. John's when we had Marcus Hatten and Eric King. I really enjoyed that one too. I'm going to try and find these and post them.
 
It was a terrific documentary, and a wonderful example how someone can turn their life around.  
 
 I'm not going to lie, I wasn't all too familiar with him, the name did ring a bell, but I caught the last 30 to 40 minutes of it yesterday morning (it came on ESPN2 at 7 am) and it was pretty moving. I'd like to see the whole thing, I actually googled his name after it was over to find more out about him.
The fact that it was directed and produced by Jonathan Hock wasn't surprising. He's a good documentarist/film maker.
 
 to find the documentary about that Fresno State team. It's called Between the Madness. It was on youtube at one point but no longer is available to be watched. It would be nice if someone could track it down.
 
 Herren played for one game at Boston College before transferring to Fresno. I don't recall, why did he play only one game that year, injury or suspension?
 
Remember seeing him in '94 at Alumni Hall for the McD's All American game with Felipe and Zendon.
 
He also has a book out called "Basketball Junkie". In the book he mentions that Chris Mullin helped him get into a rehab and in fact drove him there (I believe). During the ESPN documentary, Chris Mullin was on a brief cameo, 10 seconds or so, leading out to a commercial and mentioned having helped him out, given his own background.

ESPN had a private preview the previous Thursday which I invited to but had a conflict and had to pass. I thought ESPN did a great job editting Chris Herren's telling of his story into a cohesive 90 minutes.

The rehab I work for is working with him to help spread the word that addiction can take anyone down and that help towards recovery is available to anyone caught in that trap. It's great to see a guy like Chris Herren turning such a hardship into a way to help others. 
 
Liz Mullin actually read about Herren's final accident in a newspaper 4 days after it happened and arranged for the admission and transportation to Daytop.

The ESPN special was called The Season.

Oh, yeah! I remember recording "The Season." I'll never forget when Eric King thought he could be one of the players "shooting 3's" on that particular team. We were in Alaska for the Great Alaska Shootout.

Jarvis replied (paraphrase), "No, you're not. I wanna keep the keys to my Benz." LOL

And I think the Donald was napping in class if I recall correctly.
 
Yes it was a very good documentary. I was also at that McDonald's game. Felipe won the MVP although you could argue Jarrod Ward could have won it too. Kareem Reid of St. Raymonds was also on that East team with Felipe, Zendon and Herren.

85 I also remember there were rumors Reid would be joining Felipe and Zendon at St J. I think he would have been dynamite with our team and really helped our W-L record as TT never lived up to his billing.
 
 Jarvis only wanted Hatten and Shaw to shoot threes. I swear we were the only program in the country that actually discouraged recruiting guys who could shoot the three. We have had awful three point shooting teams the last ten years while other programs have thrived on them.

Another funny part was Eric King's professor talking to King like he would be going to the NBA one day lol
