Undoubtedly the greatest single sports memory of my youth, maybe of all time. 3 of my 4 friends that I watched the game with have passed away.  Making the memory of that night that much more special. I still get goosebumps listening to the Scooter make the call.

Thanks for this Monte and sorry about the loss of your friends.  This has special memory for me to, as I was watching the game with my hero and role model, my dad and it was the first time that I saw my favorite team in all of sports win a title.  This Saturday will mark one year since my dad passed away.  I remember jumping up and down, yelling and screaming as my dad sat there with a big smile on his face.

Thanks so much 85', and thank you for sharing the story of that one very special moment in time with your Dad. I'm sure you had countless others. He was undoubtedly an extraordinary Father and man. Prayers for your Dad in heaven on the anniversary of his passing, and for you. So sorry for monumental loss, and may the wonderful memories of your hero and role model help to comfort and sustain you now and forever.

Thanks for posting Monte, that memory is special. I was watching at the frat house with a few of my NYC brothers and I can remember the chills too. Well, those chills may have been from other things I can't quite recall...

Thank you for posting

a great memory.  Still can picture watching on a black n white tv with family     And we kept having to move the rabbit ears to get a clear picture

You're welcome OF. I was a freshman at SJU when this happened. While my memory of that night and the next day is a little bit fuzzy, (probably for a similar reasons that you had the chills) I highly doubt that I made it to class next day. I had a freakin bio lab at 8;00 on Friday mornings. Who am i kiddin, no way I made it to class the next day lol.

I remember this well.  About a year later, I saw Chris with Ellie Howard making an appearance in a store and I went over to them and thanked Chris for hitting that homer.  He smiled and shook my hand.  /media/kunena/emoticons/smile.png

Chris and Ellie, 2 of the classiest men to ever wear the pinstripes

I don't recall making too many 8 AM classes during my collegiate career. While freshman Bio was a cakewalk, I was taking Org Chem at the time as a soph and I am sure I wasn't in class either as I flunked out of pre-med. Sorry no emoji for a smoking bong.

lol. I didn't have car my first semester of school. From Bushwick to SJU by car was maybe 20 minutes. By public transportation it was over an hour and a half. I'd have to leave my house by 6:15AM to get to school by 8:00. I slept through those early Bio classes, the ones I actually made it too. Then I withdrew. Took the next semester off, worked and bought a car. Then the 8:00AM classes were ok. Not great, but ok

Not a Yankee fan so maybe my memory is not that great. However, the clip attached earlier in this thread sounded like the Scooter Phil Rizzuto. Was this the radio call?

The ABC TV call of the Chambliss homer was notable because it won the pennant of course but Howard Cosell stepped all over Keith Jackson as he was making the call. He was criticized somewhat for it.

If my memory serves me correctly, WPIX channel 11 carried the game in NYC, as did ABC 7. Maybe someone else can clarify that. As for the Jackson/Cosell call, yes Cosell really botched that one by talking over Jackson. What a blowhard he was.

Thanks Monte. Yeah, Maybe the Yankees could still have the local broadcast back then. I don’t remember. Cosell was a blowhard till the end. I was watching a show on “greatest baseball calls” and the call on ABC was mentioned because Howard couldn’t shut up and never let Keith Jackson ever finish the call. Although the 1970s and chaos seem to go hand in hand. LOL.

I know for certain that the one game playoff against the Sox was broadcast on PIX 11, just not sure if it was also broadcast on Network TV. I would think it was.

I've never heard this Keith Jackson call of the Dent HR, only the Bill White call. Thankfully no Cosell taking over him.
