Check out this inbounds play that beat Young. St.

Pretty smart play by Oakland does in Youngstown State in the first round of the Horizon League tournament. We could have used a Youngstown State win there.

I school in my conference has been doing that for years. Its pretty smart but really I dont think it should be a charge.

I would never call it a charge with less than 10 minutes left if I was a ref, but as a coach it is a decent wrinkle. Even without the charge it helps the inbounder get off an uncontested pass. Our inbounds plays have been awful..the worst I've ever seen from St. JOhn's including the Norm years where they were actually pretty good.

I have seen it tried before, but no call was made.

GTown had a play on defending an inbound from the baseline of their basket where they would stand in front and face the offensive player and once the referee gave the inbounding player the ball, the Gtown player would discreetly grab the offensive player, fall and pull down the offensive player with him trying to convince the referee that the other player charged into him trying to come in for the ball.

Ours are pathetic. Its not even a play. Never is. No one even moves lol. We have to be -100 on the year with under the basket inbound plays.

I suppose there is a legitimate purpose to screening the inbound defender, but it's clear the kid was sent in there to draw a cheap charge.

Therefore he is no better than a Duke flopper and should be tarred and feathered for such an act of pussyness.

Pretty slick play, but even slicker that the coach alerted the ref as to what the play was so the ref could make sure the player was completely stationary, instead of watching the ball and not paying close attention to the fact the offensive player was planted.

It's funny, but earlier this season Jason Kidd was fined $50,000 for spilling a soda. I know a local HS coach that has always told one of his kids on the bench to put an open water bottle on the floor in front of themselves. The coach would then innocently move upcourt to bark out instructions and kick the water bottle. He'd get a free timeout. He's done it for years, but I'm guessing not this past season after the Kidd incident.

After all of this exposure this coach Kampe will have to come up with something else. Maybe he has a bag of tricks which would be pretty cool. In baseball, Whitey Herzog would always pull slick moves that weren't common, like putting up a false pinch hitter to get the other manager to go lefty-righty, and then pinch hitting for the pinch hitter.

You have to love slick coaching moves.

But not abad way to clear space for an inbound

Absolutely, he got either a 1 and 1 or 2 foul shots (depending on how many team fouls Youngstown State had. Not only that, I am guessing the kid he used to draw the charge was one of their better free throw shooters if not their best to do it, knowing if it worked, he still needed to make the free throws.

Therefore he is no better than a Duke flopper and should be tarred and feathered for such an act of pussyness.
Desperate times call for desperate measures and what he did was not against the rules and he did get run over. Brilliant move. Flopping on the other hand is a different story as there is no foul, just trying to trick the referee.

Agreed. I don't see them as the same. This was a very clever move, and alerting the ref beforehand was brilliant. Worst case scenario is you get an open inbounds pass. I also like the play because it pretty much guarantees that someone will be open. After the kid sets the screen he'll likely be wide open himself. Solid play all around.

It's a bit of a loophole but I wouldn't liken it to a flop. It's a heady play call, and if Lavin drew up a play like that to save a game and get a W, we would be praising him to no end...but that's a bridge we'll never cross!

It was a last gasp desperate attempt. Wasn't there just 0.6 on the clock? If so, the odds of a shot getting off was astronomical with a length of court pass and difficult catch and shoot. Great call - and really the opposing coach should have done his homework since it was done earlier in the season by the same coach vs. ORal Roberts..

It's a great play design by the coach. Worst case scenario...you free up the passer to make a clean pass. However, that is a horrific call by the ref. Just disgusting. The kid flopped Duke style, didn't have his feet set and was still moving sideways into the path of the defender. Its either a moving screen or a no-call. (I would have made no call.) To make a crucial game-altering call on that is a travesty and a bail out. IMHO, the only way that call can be made against the defense is if he delivers a forearm to the guy trying to set the pick.
