Carnesecca Arena Attendance

Curious as to what people think about the attendance for the first 2 games. I was at both games and while the crowd (special thanks to the students to letting out a couple of Lets Go Redmen chants) was into the game and spirited, I was surprised that we didn't draw more. If I read correctly we were under 5K for both games. Considering the hype around this class, that both games were ESPN games and obviously the first was the season/home opener, I expected more. I am sure that the teams we played may have had something to do with it but watching the highlights later that evening just did not look good on TV. Too many empty seats. Anyone else surprised? I am sure that will change when we play the bigger schools, especially if the team gets out to a good start.

Student here. Totally Agree. Heard someone on another thread say it had a lot to do with the 7pm start time. Understandable if you have a commute. But other than the student sections the place is so empty. I know back in 2008 (my freshman year) it was the other way around and barely any students went to games.

You are correct! The start time was dictated by ESPN for these double-headers and the TV money more than makes up for 1,200 seats. It is virtually impossible for alums in Manhattan who may be working until 6pm or later for the attorneys in the family, to make a 7pm game.
$30 per ticket when playing scrubs does not help either.

Even 730 would help a lot but that doesnt fly on ESPN timeblocks.

The November/December game at CA(or Alumni Hall) has been problem for over a decade, I know under NR we never sold out the Nov-Dec alumni hall game, and did not the last few years under Jarvis.

However, 4400 or 4200 is better than the 2100-3000 Norm would get.

The worst attended game I was at was a few years ago for the pre-season NIT.

When we lost to BC @ BC in the 1st rounds, instead of getting to MSG we were relegated to playing at CA. Around Nov 2008, can't remember the date but the tickets were not given away free to students, or free to alumni.

They were $30 a piece.

No joke there was less than 200 people for the game(and 100 were working the game in some respects)

The good news was we beat Loyola Chicago that night by 20.

Then why doesn't it happen to Arizona when they play scrub teams.....they had the placed packed for their 7:00 game start. Our game showed nothing but empty red seats. It's not the teams we play its the fan base. They have always sucked at Carnesecca/Alumni for years. That includes pre Norm and post Norm. It's not the students (they show up in #'s) it's the alumni. Even when they are there the place is a morgue. Let's be honest. don't blame it on the opponents.

I think its a little easier to get around Tucson than it is Manhattan, Jersey, Long Island or Westchester to Queens.

Hey at least the seats are red

And FWIW there's a much larger potential audience for Arizona than for STJ. There may only be 500K in Tuscon but a large % of them are probably wildcat fans. Also as a traditional state school they have a much stronger connection to their alumnia base than I've seen from you STJ folk and also much much stronger student involvement. They're the only game in town. Plus their arena is probably actually in town.

Having a few friends in Tuscon I can concur with Austor, it IS the only game in town and most of the fans, including students, can actually WALK to the game. Everyone else, including my friends in north Tuscon are within 20 minutes of the arena. Our SJ students have to pay $15 the night of the game at CA. That is a joke! Charge the kids $5 and fill up the place for Christ sake!

I totally agree. an excited arena with screaming emotional kids is contageous and it will bring in the folks closer to campus.A Buck should be all they are charged.

In an effort to get more people into the Arena I heard Sly Fox is going to end their happy hour at 6:30. :)

I like the 7pm games but since I sit with Kranmars and I see the trouble he has getting out here from the city commuting each game I can totally understand how people can't get to the games in time at 7

St. John's student tix ARE $5 on the night of the game...

Agee, I thought attendance would be better. I purchased 4 tickets for the Northeastern game. Taking mt son in laws. The tickets cost me $3 on Stubhub. Also going to the doubleheader ay MSG vs Arizona, Purchased those tickets back in April. We complained during the Norm era, now we have to support our Johnnies!

Was there really a fire at the Sly Fox ? I'll bet the heat from it was still cooler than the air up in the top sections at Carnesseca Arena :)

First two CA games last year -- 4,657 and 4,008

this year -- 4,142 and 4,409

IIRC, our first two games last year were against local teams. And the first game last year is skewed because it was Lavin's debut.

7 PM start has ALOT to do with it. I'm a 2010 alumn working in Midtown. I usually work until 6 PM. I left at 5:45 yesterday, ran to my train and still got to campus 10 minutes into the first half.

It's so much easier to clock out, grab a few brews, and stagger into the Garden.

I should be in rare form for the 9:30 tip vs. Arizona. :silly:

Yeah, I work at Park and 53rd. I normally get out at 5:30, but for 7 pm games, I have to take a half-hour of personal time (I've built up a lot, fortunatly). Leave a little after 5 pm, and I'm usually there by 6:15, but if I left at 5:30, that would be cutting it close.
