Agreed. You also can’t blame Bonilla, smart man. We are constantly amazed at the sad stories of athletes, etc. that blow through fortunes, I admire Bonilla for doing the direct opposite. Surprised more players haven’t done it. And frankly, as a long suffering, diehard fan, I couldn’t care less.

Lots of people like to make fun of Mets fans today. But, as pointed out by multiple people I know, deferring the money allowed them to trade for Mike Hampton, who helped lead them to a World Series. When Hampton left as a FA, the Mets received a pick in compensation. With that pick, the Mets drafted David Wright. Make fun all you want, but the Mets made out just fine when it comes to Bonilla. Plus most professional sports franchises can find $1 mill per year between the cushions of their couch. LOL
 
Saw Bonilla speak at Barry Bonds day in San Fran last summer. He travelled cross country to be there. Said he was glad to speak for his former teammate Bonds (Pirates), because he was pretty sure there wasn't going to be an opportunity for Bonds to speak for him.
